A moving, flashing light. Centered over the Barrow County jail but not remaining stationary. A UFO?

A report posted on UFO Stalker, a website that tracks reported UFO sightings throughout the country, indicated a recent sighting in Winder.

The following information was submitted on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2012, regarding the sighting Friday, Aug. 31.

We were driving from barrow county to gwinett county and saw a strange flash in the sky. At first we thought it was police lights. When we got closer we realized it was in the sky over the jail and moving toward tennesee. The light was flashing but not staying in the same place. There were as many as four at a time but never in the same arrangement. It looked like one large light and 3 smaller lights.

This follows a report of unidentified flying objects in Bethlehem this past May and in Winder in April.

I received this correspondence on 8/28/2012...and received a followup last night 8/29/2012. I'm posting the unedited email:

Sir - my brother referred your email addy to me. He thought you may have an answer to what I saw this past July while camping in the Sierra Nevada Mts. near Tioga Lake, California. My teenage son and I were camping in our RV. There were other campers in the area but not very close to us. On the 3rd night of our trip, we encountered something that neither of us can explain.

This is bear country and I know that there have been Bigfoot reports over the years. But what we saw was neither as far as we can tell. We secured all of the food and other supplies in the RV and were getting ready to go to bed. It was about 12:30 am. My son fell asleep quickly while I was getting a few things ready as we were going to leave this location later in the morning. I was looking at a map when I started to hear high pitched screams. At first I thought it was a coyote but it was a single scream and sounded more human - like a woman's scream. I opened the RV door and stood silent in the doorway. Once again the high pitched scream started. This time, it woke my son. We both stood at the door as the screams continued from the direction of the mountain. After about 10 mins the screams stopped - we both went to bed.

Something startled me while I was sleeping because I woke in a panic. I looked at my watch - it was 2:40 am. Then all of a sudden that same high pitched scream erupted outside of the RV. As it started my son jumped out of his rack and fell to the floor. I grabbed my .44 just in case. As we looked out through the windshield the moonlight was bright enough to illuminate a tall thin creature with light colored skin. My son yelled 'zombie!' - it did look like a female human form but the face and the rest of the body looked horrible. It reminded me of an old witch - no clothes, deformed face, long light colored hair, long arms and legs. I figured it stood almost 7 ft. It was walking away from the RV toward the lake. I had seen enough. I made sure everything was ready to go and drove out of there ASAP.

We ended up near Mono Lake. A few days later I was able to talk to a ranger as he walked through the camping area. He was an older guy and quite engaging. I described what we witnessed - my son also verified what we had seen. The ranger got a serious look on his face and said that over the years, something similar had been reported a few times. He said that they called it 'Penelope' but he didn't know why it had gotten that name. That's all he knew.

When I got home I searched the internet but no information was available. My brother gave me your email addy and said you may have an idea of what it was. I'd appreciate your help - you can also call me at XXX-XXXXXXX. LR

A Lakewood resident reported seeing an unidentified flying object from his back porch on the city's west side at around 11:30 p.m. on Thursday.

According to UFO Stalker, a website that monitors UFO sightings, the resident reported seeing a "very bright star-like object in the distance," about a mile away.

The unnamed resident logged the testimony into the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.

"I thought this may be Sirius, but then noticed it was ascending in the sky at jumped up about 60 degrees in approximately 45 seconds and hovered there for a LONG time," the resident reported. "Not the most exciting encounter I know, but I feel it should be reported."

At first, the resident reported thinking it was an airplane, but "to my surprise, it never came any closer."

Imagine the scene: it's late one cold, dark, winter's eve in a little old hamlet in central England. You're walking home, along a winding, tree-shrouded old road with only the light of an eerie full moon to illuminate your path. But, as you continue on your trek to your centuries-old cottage, you begin to feel uneasy.

A terrible realization suddenly hits you hard: you are being followed, or stalked, by some sort of large, predatory animal. It's an animal that - even though you have yet to see it up close and personal - you know deep in your heart has you firmly in its sights.

Maharashtra, India - Reports of mysterious underground sounds in Jawhar taluka of the district have promoted the local administration to take help from geological experts to unravel the reasons behind the phenomenon.

Residents of Kadidond village in the tribal-dominated taluka have complained about hearing such sounds several times since August 25, sources in the district headquarters said today.

Following this, the local tehsildar, accompanied with other officials, visited the village for an on the spot assessment and to instill confidence among the anxious villagers.

In the movies werewolves enjoy much of the same mystique and magnetism as their archenemy... the vampire. Both are seductive bad boys, although romantic encounters with the prior are portrayed as carnal and wild, as opposed to the mesmerizing sophistication of vampiric liaisons. It is no wonder young heroines have a hard time making up their minds. Lucky for the parents of teenage girls, werewolves are only mythological creatures brewed up in the imaginations of creative storytellers. At least that was what I thought until I flipped through the pages of Linda Godfrey's new book, Real Wolfmen: True Encounters in Modern America.

Godfrey had not thought much of the issue either until late 1991. As a writer for a newspaper in Walworth County, Wisconsin, she had decided to write a story on local reports they had received of a large hairy animal described as a dog that walked on its hind legs. Her story sparked a nationwide fascination with what was being dubbed the "Beast of Bray Road." The events apparently not only pique the interest of Godfrey, but of people throughout the United States.

Pocatello - Academia is a lonely place for Sasquatch hunter Jeff Meldrum.

Meldrum, who teaches anatomy and anthropology at Idaho State University, might be the only college professor in the U.S. researching and publishing work on Bigfoot, or at least the only one putting his name to the subject.

Meldrum brought attention to the subject with his 2006 book, Sasquatch: Legend Meets Science. Nearly all of the 13,000 copies of the book have been sold.

The Sasquatch limb is a thin branch to venture out on, and in the academic world, some would say it's more akin to thin ice.

"People say, 'You are paid by Idaho State and you are doing this?'" Meldrum said. "But this is legitimate research. This could be one of the most outstanding questions in natural history and human anthropology that we have today.

"I've gone to great lengths to go about it in a very objective, very professional manner in order to cultivate credibility."

The work will pay dividends if 54-year-old Meldrum or someone else proves the existence of a bipedal hominid that isn't a human or known primate, something Meldrum thinks will happen in his lifetime.

In the meantime, criticism follows.

"Each time you get these (different species) pushing closer to the present, you have to ask, 'why do we assume we're the only ones?'" - Meldrum
