Surat in Gujarat received a whopping over 400 mm rainfall in 36 hours, which created a flood-like situation in several parts of the city on Tuesday as several roads got submerged and residential societies were inundated, throwing normal life out of gear, officials said.

The gravity of the situation can be gauged from the fact that people in some areas arranged for tractors to ferry them from one place to another, while in some other parts of the city, boats were seen operating on flooded roads to help residents cross over to safer areas.

The administration is bracing for more showers as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places with isolated extremely heavy rains in Surat and some other districts in the state on Wednesday.

Other snowfalls were reported in the Argentine province of Buenos Aires, but none in densely populated areas
In an extraordinary meteorological event, Buenos Aires and parts of Uruguay experienced rare June snowfall, surprising residents and meteorologists alike. On June 23, 2025, snowflakes were observed in Buenos Aires Province. The National Meteorological Service of Argentina had issued alerts for the possibility of snow, and these forecasts materialized as temperatures hovered around 3°C, accompanied by strong winds .

This snowfall is particularly noteworthy as snow in Buenos Aires is an infrequent occurrence. The last significant snowfall in the city was recorded on July 9, 2007, marking the first major snowfall in 89 years. The rarity of such events underscores the unusual nature of the recent weather patterns.

In Uruguay, while snow was not reported, the country experienced an intense cold snap during the same period. Snow in Uruguay is rare but not exceptional for few isolated flurries but it's extremely rare for widespread episodes (1918,1962) /https://x.com/extremetemps/. The cold front led to widespread frost, a phenomenon uncommon for the region.

Shallow 6.2 magnitude earthquake strikes off the Philippines, no Tsunami warning issued

A powerful earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale struck the Philippines on Tuesday morning, June 24, though no tsunami warnings have been issued so far.

According to the National Centre for Seismology, the quake hit at 7:28 AM local time, east of the Philippine islands, at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers below the surface.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported a slightly higher magnitude of 6.4 but confirmed that no tsunami alert had been triggered.

The Philippines, located on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," frequently experiences seismic activity. The last major earthquake to hit the country was in July 2022, a magnitude 7 tremor that caused landslides, ground fissures, and widespread damage in the northern Abra region. That quake resulted in 11 deaths and injured over 600 people, according to AFP.

Authorities are monitoring the situation, and no immediate reports of significant damage or casualties have emerged from Tuesday's quake.

Japan's Shinmoedake volcano erupts, first since 2018 - alert level remains at two

mmmmmm
Shinmoedake, a volcano in the mountain range on the border of Japan's Kagoshima and Miyazaki prefectures, erupted on Sunday, marking its first eruption since 2018.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported that the eruption occurred at around 4:37 pm local time, sending a plume of ash over 500 metres above the crater.

The smoke drifted eastward toward Miyazaki prefecture, and no falling volcanic rocks have been confirmed so far, the national broadcaster NHK reported.

Volcanic alert level two, which restricts entry near the crater, remains in effect for the region.

Authorities urge caution within a 2-km radius of the crater due to the risk of large volcanic rocks and pyroclastic flows within approximately one kilometre.

Residents are advised to stay alert, especially on the downwind side, where ash and small rocks may be carried over long distances. -
