A young boy was mauled to death while trying to pet his landlord's pit bull after the animal was left alone with him and his two siblings.

Enzo Gabriel Silva Custodio, four, died on the spot from his injuries after being attacked by the dog in Itumbiara, Brazil, on July 2. His mum, 25-year-old Sabrina Silva, had left the youngster at their rented home with her two other children, aged nine and seven, as she went to work, claiming she had no where else to leave the trio. She had agreed the landlord could leave his dog with them, having believed at the time that it was tame.

Investigators believe Enzo approached the pooch while it was eating, and that the dog, feeling threatened, had launched at the young boy.

His mother found him with severe injuries when she came back home for lunch and called paramedics, who tragically declared the boy dead at the scene. His body has since been handed over to forensic experts for an autopsy, and Ms Silva has been arrested on suspicion of child neglect resulting in death.

Landslides triggered by heavy and continuous rainfall across Uttarakhand have blocked roads at several places, disrupting normal life and severely affecting the Char Dham yatra. As per data from the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), 113 roads, including two national highways, were blocked on Thursday. Chamoli district reported the highest number of road blockades at 23, followed by Pithoragarh with 22.

The Kedarnath yatra was temporarily halted on Thursday morning after a landslide struck the crucial Sonprayag - Gaurikund route near Mankutia around 10 pm the previous night, stranding over 40 pilgrims returning from the shrine. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) evacuated the pilgrims by opening a temporary passage through the debris.

Officials said the damaged stretch was not fit for movement of vehicles, prompting the authorities to divert incoming pilgrims to safer locations. Road restoration efforts are underway and by Thursday noon, pedestrian movement was partially restored.

"The Munkatiya Sliding Zone and the small parking area near Gaurikund are now open for pedestrian use," said a district police officer.

A volcano erupted in Japan on Thursday as the country approaches the date of a 'mega disaster' forecast by a 'prophet' decades ago.

The huge blast took place on Mount Shinmoedake at 2:01pm local time, sending a towering ash plume and making it one of the biggest eruptions on the mountain in recent years.

Japan's Meteorological Agency is now bracing for falling volcanic rocks and pyroclastic flows within a near two mile radius of Mount Shinmoedake.

Authorities have also warned residents to stay inside as it prepares for the worst.

It comes as an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 was recorded off the coast of the Tokara island chain yesterday.

A major natural disaster was predicted by manga artist Ryo Tatsuki, who has been likened to Bulgarian prophet Baba Vanga.

Record cold grips Argentina, Chile and Uruguay

A polar air mass has brought record low temperatures to Argentina, Chile and Uruguay, causing at least 15 deaths and forcing governments to restrict gas supplies and activate emergency shelters.

The three South American countries have all recorded sharply below-zero temperatures as the polar air originated from Antarctica and swept across the region.

In Argentina, at least nine homeless people have died from the cold this winter, according to NGO Proyecto 7.

The capital Buenos Aires recorded its lowest temperature since 1991 at -1.9 degrees Celsius (28.6 Fahrenheit) on Wednesday, while the coastal city of Miramar saw snow for the first time in 34 years. Further south, the town of Maquinchao recorded -18C on Tuesday.

Electricity demand caused cuts across Buenos Aires, leaving thousands without power for over 24 hours in some areas.

The government suspended gas supplies to industries and petrol stations Wednesday to ensure household supplies, and removed price controls on gas cylinders Thursday.

With just seven months to go before the 2026 Winter Olympics, the Alpine resort town of Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, is confronting a temporary setback after a landslide earlier this week severed its primary southern access road. However, despite reports suggesting the Olympic host is isolated, local officials have moved quickly to assure the public that the Queen of the Dolomites remains open and accessible.

On July 1, a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall and unstable terrain struck the village of San Vito di Cadore, sending more than 3,000 cubic meters (105,900 cubic feet) of debris onto a key stretch of State Road 51 (SS51), also known as the Alemagna route. The landslide—measuring 100 meters (328 feet) wide and four meters (13 feet) high—temporarily closed the road in both directions. No injuries were reported, and emergency crews have been working around the clock to clear the blockage.
