The Sundhnukur volcano has erupted near Iceland's capital, Reykjavik, the 12th volcanic eruption in the North Atlantic island nation since 2021, the Icelandic Meteorological Office says.
The agency said in a statement on Wednesday morning that an eruptive fissure in southwestern Iceland is 700 to 1,000 metres (765 to 1,095 yards) long.
"Lava is mostly flowing to the southeast and is not approaching any infrastructure," it added. "Based on GPS measurements and deformation signals, it is likely that this was a relatively small eruption."
Live images showed flows of lava and smoke being belched into the sky.
People were evacuated from the Blue Lagoon, a luxury geothermal spa resort, and the nearby fishing town of Grindavik, according to the public broadcaster RUV, which quoted police.
The Pacific Ring of Fire is experiencing an unprecedented surge in volcanic activity, reaching alarming levels in 2024 and continuing into 2025, News.Az reports, citing foreign media.
As of May 2, 2025, 47 volcanoes remain in active eruption status, marking one of the highest counts in recorded history, News.Az reports, citing foreign media.
Throughout 2024, 74 eruptions occurred across 65 different volcanoes, significantly surpassing previous years' activity. Volcanic monitoring agencies worldwide have raised alert levels, warning that the intense seismic activity in the region shows no signs of subsiding.
Geologists are particularly concerned about the clustering of major eruptions within such a compressed timeframe, suggesting possible interconnected geological processes. Indonesia stands at the epicenter of this volcanic awakening, with 120 active volcanoes positioned along the horseshoe-shaped fault system.
According to meteorological analyses, the region (shaded in dark blue on anomaly maps) has recorded daily highs and lows far below seasonal norms, with some cities enduring historically low daytime temperatures for June and early July. San Francisco, typically known for its mild summers, has been particularly affected. Since June 1, the city has registered just one day where the temperature reached 70°F (21°C) — an astonishing figure for a city that averages several such days each summer month.
Severe flash flooding across the tri-state area on Monday caused major subway delays and road closures across the Big Apple and pushed New Jersey to declare a state of emergency.
All five boroughs and Nassau County were under a flash flood warning through midnight, according to the National Weather Service.
"Flooding can be deadly and often strikes with little or no warning. Streets, basements, and below-grade spaces can fill with water in minutes. If you live in a basement apartment or low-lying area, be ready to move to higher ground," NYC Emergency Management advised on X.
"Keep your Go Bag near the door and clear exit paths. Avoid flooded areas. Never walk or drive into water. Turn around, don't drown."

Two women were hospitalized, one in critical condition. A man and a male teenager received medical treatment at the scene.

An Airbus A330 plane that had just started its journey to JFK airport in the United States from Barcelona airport was forced to return to the Catalan city a few minutes later on Saturday after suffering damage to the nose of the aircraft, which had significant dents caused by a heavy storm that unloaded an intense hailstorm.
The cause was the same 'Dana' depresson that paralysed rail transport for hours in some parts of Catalonia, with cancellations of long-distance and Rodalíes commuter services, and which was also strongly felt in Aragon, Navarre and Valencia. In this case, the storm put a damper on the plans of passengers on the flight to the US.
A man is dead after being attacked by two pit bulls in the backyard of a home in Lancaster, authorities confirmed.
The attack happened around 10:30 p.m. Saturday on 22nd Street East, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Details about what led up to the attack were not available.
The victim, who has not been identified, was taken to hospital where he later died. It's unclear whether he lived at the home.
According to the sheriff's department, deputies had to shoot one of the pit bulls in the leg, but that dog's condition was unknown.
Four dogs, including puppies, were taken by L.A. County Animal Control.
Video from the scene also shows a woman being taken into custody, and a deputy carrying a small child away from the home before being placed in a patrol vehicle.
"The purpose of GLADIO was to attack civilians, the people - women, children, innocent people, unknown people, far removed from any political game. The reason was quite simple: to force the public to turn to the State and demand greater security. Under a strategy of tension, you 'destabilize in order to stabilize', to create tension within society and promote conservative, reactionary social and political tendencies."
