Rubio declared a return to brutal western colonialism - and Europe applauded

In Munich, the US announced its intent to crush all opposition to its permanent status as imperial top dog, even if that means destroying everything, and all of us, in the process.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio's speech at the Munich Security Conference last weekend was another troubling declaration of intent by the Trump administration.

The explicit goal of US foreign policy, according to Rubio, is to resurrect the western colonial order that persisted for some five centuries until the Second World War.

Old-school, white-man's-burden colonialism is unapologetically back.

In Rubio's preposterous retelling, Europe's colonisation of much of the planet, and the rape and pillage of its resources, was a glorious era of western exploration, innovation and creativity. The West brought a "superior" civilisation to backward peoples while maintaining global order.

Reflecting on the era before 1945, he observed: "The West had been expanding - its missionaries, its pilgrims, its soldiers, its explorers pouring out from its shores to cross oceans, settle new continents, build vast empires extending out across the globe."

According to Rubio, that decline was accelerated by what he dismissed as the "abstractions of international law", established by the United Nations in the immediate postwar period. In the pursuit of what he derisively termed "a perfect world", these new universal laws - ones that treated all humans as equal - served only to hamstring western colonialism.

Rubio neglected to mention that the purpose of international law was to prevent a return to the horrors of the Second World War: the extermination of civilians in death camps and the firebombing of European and Japanese cities.

During his speech, Rubio offered Europe the chance to join the Trump administration in reviving "the West's age of dominance" to "renew the greatest civilisation in human history."

"What we want is a reinvigorated alliance that recognises that what has ailed our societies is not just a set of bad policies but a malaise of hopelessness and complacency. An alliance - the alliance that we want is one that is not paralysed into inaction by fear - fear of climate change, fear of war, fear of technology," he said.

Ooops: NYT accidentally lets slip there really is a Left-wing judicial coup against Trump

judge gavel
CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin has never been one to show good judgement. When he's not getting caught conducting "personal business" on a staff Zoom call, he's accidentally admitting that there's an ongoing leftist-led judicial coup designed to stymie President Trump's agenda.

The serial self-pleasurer let the proverbial cat out of the bag in his Monday opinion column for The New York Times. Titled, "The Plan for a Radically Different Supreme Court Is Here," the article purports to roll out a blueprint for countering conservative appointments of originalist judges to the bench but inadvertently discloses the existence of leftists' efforts to weaponize the judicial system against Trump.

The admission comes in the piece's opening paragraphs, in which Toobin discusses the American Constitution Society and its new president, Phil Brest. The ACS has often been described as the less successful and left-wing alternative to the conservative Federalist Society, which has become an influential force in getting originalists appointed to the Supreme Court and other federal judgeships.

SOTT Focus: Confirmed: Israeli Intelligence Installed & Maintained Security System at Epstein's NYC Apartment Complex

The Israeli government installed security equipment and controlled access to a Manhattan apartment building managed by convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, according to a set of emails recently released by the Department of Justice. The equipment was installed starting in early 2016 at 301 E. 66th Street — the residence where former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak frequently stayed for stretches at a time.

The security operation at "Ehud's apartment" was in place for at least two years, emails from the DOJ disclosure show, with officials from the Israeli permanent mission to the United Nations corresponding regularly with Epstein's staff regarding security. The apartment was technically owned by a company connected to Epstein's brother, Mark Epstein, but was effectively controlled by Jeffrey Epstein. Units in the building were frequently loaned out to Epstein's contacts and used to house underage models.

Rafi Shlomo, then-director of protective service at the Israeli mission to the United Nations in New York and head of Barak's security, corresponded with Epstein employees to arrange meetings to discuss security and coordinate installation of specialized surveillance equipment at the 66th Street residence. Shlomo personally controlled access to the apartment for guests and even conducted background checks on cleaners and Epstein's employees.

Zelensky slams Trump pressure over ceding territory as 'not fair'

Says Ukrainian public won't let him

Ukraine's President Zelensky has over some four years of war with Russia made very clear his unbending stance that Ukraine will never cede territory for sake of achieving peace under his watch. Yet reaching a peace settlement precisely hinges on this, as Russia will also not give up the territory it has conquered in the Donbas, including the four eastern territories in declared part of the Russian Federation in a 2022 'popular referendum'.

The White House finally appears to be ratcheting up the pressure on Zelensky to make some kind of serious land concession, however. This was evident in the latest comments by President Trump on the topic of Geneva talks this week. Frustration with Kiev was evident he told reporters aboard Air Force One, "Well, we have big talks." He stated that "It's going to be very easy. I mean, look, so far, Ukraine better come to the table fast. That's all I'm telling you."

Comment: Choice B. The oligarchs and neo-nazi goons keeping him in power won't let him settle, because as long as the war goes on he keeps breathing and the money laundering machine keeps spinning. Btw Vlodomir, sweetie, war is, and has never been "fair". Welcome to reality.

Aaaand more tantrums:
Zelensky has newly complained amid the latest Geneva trilateral talks that the US delegation could pressure him to make "unsuccessful decisions" and he is urging Washington to back off, even using expletives to make his point.

But the latest colorful verbal broadside, cited by Axios on Tuesday as Russian and Ukrainian delegations convened in Geneva, saw Zelensky take direct aim at the head of Moscow's negotiating team, Vladimir Medinsky. Kiev's frustration at the state of dialogue has been boiling over.

Medinsky has argued - along with numerous Russian officials, including President Vladimir Putin - that the conflict's historical roots must be addressed as part of any settlement, especially given the bulk of the Ukrainian population in the east (Donbas) has always been Russian speaking and looked to Moscow historically.

Zelensky dismissed that approach outright:
"We don't have time for all this shit," he told the outlet. "So we have to decide, and have to finish the war."
Regardless, the Kremlin has lately made clear its aims to take the full Donbas either through talks or by force. Ukraine's military still holds 10% of the Donbas, however, and Kiev is rejecting a US proposal for it to draw back its forces as part of a conflict freeze leading to settlement.

The Trump administration is planning to build a 5,000-person military base in Gaza, sprawling more than 350 acres, according to Board of Peace contracting records reviewed by The Guardian.

The site is envisioned as a military operating base for a future International Stabilization Force (ISF), planned as a multinational military force composed of pledged troops. The ISF is part of the newly created Board of Peace which is meant to govern Gaza. The Board of Peace is chaired by Donald Trump and led in part by his son-in-law Jared Kushner.

Watch: Macron calls free speech online 'pure bullshit'

Macron

French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday said that the notion of free speech on social media platforms - is "pure bullshit," because algorithmically served content can lead to hate speech (such as the right to say his elderly wife has a penis and gives him black eyes).

The comments come after the US recently imposed bans on a former European official and pro-censorship activists for trying to police online speech, while US Secretary of State Marco Rubio justifies the moves as pushback against the "global censorship-industrial complex."

Europe, including Germany and the UK, have been weighing social media bans for minors, a move that could impact critical advertising revenue for companies and platforms such as Meta, TikTok, YouTube, Snap, X, and others.

The US and Israel have filled the Middle East with time bombs - Russia's Iran ambassador

The main reason for the current crisis is the West's desire to force Tehran into a neocolonial framework. With the US and Israel both openly contemplating attacks on Iran, the entire Middle East feels like a powder keg one spark away from catastrophic escalation.

As Russia marked Diplomatic Workers' Day last week, RT spoke to Alexey Dedov, the Russian ambassador in Iran, to get an on-the-ground perspective of how the situation might developed and whether conflict is inevitable.

RT: In an interview with RT ahead of Diplomat's Day, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov noted that today there are many "time bombs" present in the Middle East. How has the situation in the region changed over the past year? Which of these "time bombs" do you personally consider the most dangerous, and why?
AD: Unfortunately, the destructive policies of the United States, Israel, and a number of Western countries have led to a significant complication of the situation in the Middle East over the past year. It was precisely as a result of their efforts that these "time bombs" emerged - bombs that constructively minded countries in the region are now attempting to defuse through joint diplomatic efforts. Russia, if necessary, is ready to contribute to the settlement of the current situation.

What nepotism? Pelosi appears to have picked the Dem candidate for president in 2028

Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) may be retiring from Congress at the end of this term, but she's not done trying to shape presidential races. The 85-year-old former House speaker has turned into what one former aide calls "a Gavin fan-girl," deploying her legendary donor network and political capital to boost California Gov. Gavin Newsom as a 2028 White House contender. The move lands as a calculated slight to Kamala Harris, who polls ahead of Newsom nationally but appears to have lost Pelosi's confidence after the 2024 debacle.

According to a report from Axios, Pelosi has spent months publicly and privately vouching for Newsom.

"From the standpoint of leadership, vision, and values, knowledge of the issues, strategic thinking about how to get things done, he's masterful," she told The New Yorker. She told Vogue earlier this month, "I've seen him grow politically, I've also seen him have this beautiful family, and for all of us who love him, seeing him evolve has been wonderful to behold."

Comment: The mid-terms may modify those conclusions, but right now, it's looking pretty grim for 2028.

Best of the Web: Romania's stolen elections were only the start: Inside the EU's war on democracy

Romania European union rig elections war on democracy

How Brussels' Digital Services Act has been used to pressure platforms and electoral control in member states

Romania's 2024 presidential election was already one of the most controversial political episodes in the European Union in recent years. A candidate who won the first round was prevented from contesting the second. The vote was annulled. Claims of Russian interference were advanced without public evidence.

At the time, the affair raised urgent questions about democratic standards inside the EU. A congressional investigation reviewed by RT raises even more question. They indicate that the annulment of the Romanian election was accompanied by sustained efforts to pressure social media platforms into suppressing political speech - efforts coordinated through mechanisms established under the EU's Digital Services Act.

What appeared to be a national political crisis now looks increasingly like a test case for how far EU institutions are willing to go in intervening in the political processes of member states.
