Alleged NSA leaker Reality Winner's interrogation transcript filed in court

'I wasn't trying to be a Snowden or anything.'

A National Security Agency contractor accused of leaking a classified report on Russian hacking aimed at the 2016 election told FBI agents she smuggled the document out of a high security intelligence facility in her pantyhose.

That and other details appear in a transcript federal prosecutors filed in court Wednesday detailing the interrogation of 25-year-old linguist Reality Winner by the FBI as they carried out a search warrant at her home in June.

After insisting for some time that she printed out the report and kept it on her desk for a few days before disposing of it in a burn bag, Winner caved and acknowledged she hid the document before sending it off to a news outlet, now known to be The Intercept.

"So how did you get it out of the office?" FBI agent Justin Garrick asked.

"Folded it in half in my pantyhose," Winner replied.

The transcript - filed with a federal magistrate judge as part of the government's effort to keep Winner behind bars - also provides new details on Winner's explanation for why she allegedly took a copy of the document from the NSA facility at which she worked at Fort Gordon in Augusta, Georgia.

Winner appears to say she believed the contents of the report - which described Russian spearfishing cyberattacks aimed at U.S. voter registration databases - should be in the public debate.

Comment: More background: And from Just how serious was Russia's 'probing' of the US election system?

Washington's Blog asked Bill Binney, the NSA executive who created the agency's mass surveillance program for digital information, who served as the senior technical director within the agency, who managed six thousand NSA employees, the 36-year NSA veteran widely regarded as a "legend" within the agency and the NSA's best-ever analyst and code-breaker, who mapped out the Soviet command-and-control structure before anyone else knew how, and so predicted Soviet invasions before they happened ("in the 1970s, he decrypted the Soviet Union's command system, which provided the US and its allies with real-time surveillance of all Soviet troop movements and Russian atomic weapons").

Binney told us:
If you think about this article [the story by the Intercept], and assume it's true, then hacking a few days before the election is a little late if they really wanted to influence the voting.

To me, this sounds more like fishing for information to find out as much as they could about the democratic party much like the Chinese did hacking the OPM [U.S. Office of Personnel Management] files. I'm sure the Chinese found more use for the data they got then the Russians did on the Democratic party because Hillary did not win.
Former CIA officer Philip Giraldi agrees:
The Intercept article cites an unnamed intelligence official who "cautioned against drawing too big a conclusion from the document because a single analysis is not necessarily definitive." To that I would add, "even if it is all true as described."

And I would also make some additional observations about what the report and Intercept article are suggesting. First and foremost would be the questions of scale and timing.

There is no evidence that the Russians, or whoever carried out the probes, were able to tamper with either the actual voting process or the tabulation of votes. Indeed, the NSA report dismisses any such possibility. Second, corrupting an election in a country as large as the United States with an electoral system that is largely decentralized would require much more than a probe of 122 local officials starting a week before the balloting. So there was clearly no intention to disrupt the election or to tilt it in a certain direction based on the evidence provided by the NSA report.

I would also note that there is no proof provided in the report to support the assertion that the GRU, Russian military-intelligence service, carried out the probes. Would a highly-sophisticated intelligence service behave so transparently in an operation that would certainly be regarded as highly sensitive? I think not. Cut-outs would have been used to misdirect anyone looking to determine the hand behind the hacks.

All of which is not to say the Russian government didn't do it or order it done, but it seems to me that the revelations provided in the NSA report do not go very far beyond the kind of random probings that are part and parcel of foreign-intelligence operations as carried out by any sophisticated service. Did someone in Moscow think it might be useful to have some kind of idea of how to meddle with U.S. election technology if that type of info might prove useful down the road? Quite possibly. It should be noted that the U.S. National Security Agency illegally collects vast quantities of information on ordinary Americans but that does not necessarily imply intent to use it in a malicious way. It is a desirable capability and intelligence agencies are always working to expand their reach.

So was Russian intelligence probing U.S. electoral systems? Quite plausibly yes, and it should be a matter of concern for every American as it suggests a vulnerability in the electronics behind how we vote. But did Russia actually interfere with the election or seek to use the probing to elect a particular candidate? The answer is clearly no. The article and the document it is based on should serve as a wake-up call to those who are complacent about the security of our technologies. But on a political level, we are back to square one, with often hysterical allegations surfaced as part of the media and political storm we now refer to as Russiagate.

IAEA anxious over North Korean nuke program's "rapid progress" - "new global threat"

North Korea's nuclear weapons program demonstrates "rapid progress" and poses a "new global threat" to international security, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has said following the sixth nuclear test by Pyongyang earlier this month.

On September 3 Pyongyang conducted its sixth and most powerful nuclear test yet, using a hydrogen bomb that was allegedly small enough to be mounted on a ballistic missile. The blast was so potent that it registered as a 5.6 magnitude earthquake.

"(The) yield is much bigger than the previous test, and it means North Korea made very rapid progress," International IAEA Director Yukiya Amano told reporters in Seoul, after a meeting with South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha.

"Combined with other elements, this is a new threat and this is a global threat," he added referring to the development of North Korean ballistic missile rockets.

Done deal? Russia receives first payment from Turkey for S-400 air defense systems

Moscow has confirmed that it received an advance from Turkey for the purchase of Russian S-400 anti-aircraft systems. The much-discussed deal may signal closer ties between both countries, as well as a growing rift between Turkey and its NATO allies.

"Yes, we have received it [the down payment]. We can't name the dates of supply yet. They want it earlier [than 2019], but the issue is still under discussion," Russian presidential aide for military-technical cooperation Vladimir Kozhin said as cited by RIA Novosti, adding that the deal has come into force.

Earlier in September, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also confirmed that Ankara had paid a deposit for the purchase of S-400 anti-aircraft systems from Russia.

"The process will continue by the transfer of a credit from Russia to us. Both [Russian President] Mr. Vladimir Putin and myself, we are determined on this issue," he told journalists after returning from Kazakhstan on September 10.

Comment: This is pretty big news. This deal was finalized only very recently. As Mattis pointed out, this technology cannot be integrated with NATO systems. It signals a big step away from NATO and a big step towards Russia. And the Russians are taking a big risk giving a NATO state their tech, where it can potentially be studied and reverse-engineered in order to detect its weaknesses. The Russians must be pretty confidant that Turkey won't stab them in the back again. See: Syria, Iraq and S-400: Putin to meet Erdogan in Turkey

The DOJ blocking the extradition of a Clinton-Soros money man to China - why?

Miles Kwok Soros
Guo Wengui, also known under the names Guo Wen Gui, Guo Haoyun and Miles Kwok, is a Chinese billionaire businessman later became a political activist who controls Beijing Zenith Holdings, and other assets.
Why is the Trump Justice Department blocking the extradition of a Clinton money-man and a Soros associate to China?

What does the Chinese Intelligence turncoat know about the Deep State and why are they protecting him?

Miles Kwok has been convicted of multi-billion dollar financial crimes in both the United States and China after working as a Chinese intelligence asset and receiving the three highest medals from Chinese intelligence for providing surveillance on US political figures. While working for Chinese Intel, Kwok was tied to political bribes, kidnappings, misappropriation of funds and alleged abuse of women - including charges of rape and confinement.

Then, however, Kwok turned on his spymasters and stole approximately $8 billion dollars from the Chinese State in a sophisticated financial crime.

During his time in the United States, Kwok has emerged as a major bundler and fundraiser for Hillary Clinton. He was seen at the Clinton Global Initiative Conference in New York and has been seen dining at Cipriani at the Sherry Netherland where Kwok lives in a $4.8 million-dollar apartment with George Soros. Soros has been a major funder of the Clintons and has funded various front organizations, think tanks and charities who utilize violence and disruption in their attempts to destabilize President Trump. Their goal is to topple Democratically elected governments, particularly in Eastern Europe. Soros was, of course, a Nazi collaborator.

UN investigation concludes UN SG Hammarskjold's death NOT due to pilot error - still waiting for classified U.S./UK documents

Dag Hammarskjold
A UN report into the death of its former secretary general Dag Hammarskjöld in a 1961 plane crash in central Africa has found that there is a "significant amount of evidence" that his flight was brought down by another aircraft.

The report, delivered to the current secretary general, António Guterres, last month, took into account previously undisclosed information provided by the US, UK, Belgian, Canadian and German governments.

Its author, Mohamed Chande Othman, a former Tanzanian chief justice, found that the US and UK governments had intercepted radio traffic in the area at the time and suggested that the 56-year-old mystery could be solved if the contents of those classified recordings were produced.

"I am indebted for the assistance that I received, which uncovered a large amount of valuable new information," Othman said in an executive summary of his report, seen by the Guardian. "I can confidently state that the deeper we have gone into the searches, the more relevant information has been found."

The Russian Ministry of Defense has issued a scathing rebuke to a claim by UK Defence Secretary Michael Fallon that Britain has made a "major contribution" to "crippling" Islamic State in Syria and Iraq.

"As we come closer to the rout of Islamic State [IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL] by the Syrian Army, supported by the Russian Air Force, we are suddenly discovering that all these years, somewhere behind our backs it was Michael Fallon who did more than anyone to help defeat the terrorists," Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov said in a statement.

On the third anniversary of the UK's involvement in the bombing campaign against the radical group, Fallon said its role was second only to the United States in the American-led coalition.

Catalan high court orders U.S. tech giant Google to block email being used for independence vote

The High Court in Catalonia has ordered US tech giant Google to remove an application which provided information on where and how to vote in Sunday's referendum on the region's independence from Spain.

The judge said that the "On Votar 1-Oct" application on the Google Play smartphone app store violated the ruling of Spain's Constitutional Court, which labelled the plebiscite illegal.

Google was also ordered to block any future applications developed by the gmail address "Onvotar1oct@gmail.com," which was behind the banned app.

The local authorities in Catalonia reiterated on Friday that the vote will go ahead as scheduled on Sunday, despite strong opposition from Madrid.

Assange reminds Russophobes that Podesta emails showed Facebook colluded with Clinton

Evil Zuckerberg
As US lawmakers demand social media companies show how their platforms were allegedly used by Russia to meddle in the 2016 election, WikiLeaks co-founder tweeted emails that show Facebook executives in direct communication with one candidate's team.

Beginning on October 7 last year, WikiLeaks published hundreds of emails from the private account of Hillary Clinton's campaign chairman John Podesta. The daily drops continued for a couple days after the November 8 election.

On Thursday, as US media were speculating about "Russian" meddling on Twitter, Facebook and Reddit, Julian Assange tweeted some of the Podesta emails with a reminder that the social network's leading lights were Clinton fans.

In an email from early January 2016, Podesta wrote to Facebook's Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg, saying that he was excited to work with her on getting Clinton elected.

"Look forward to working with you to elect the first woman President of the United States," Podesta wrote. Sandberg replied she was "thrilled" by the progress that Clinton was making.

Israelis to build 3000 new homes in the West Bank, PLO turns to International Criminal Court in the Hague to investigate war crime

Palestine
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has pledged to build 3,000 housing units in the West Bank.

"Israel will not give up any settlements in the future, no matter what happens", Netanyahu said during a ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of the occupation of the West Bank in Gush Etzion, adding that the settlements are here to stay.

The Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization has since decided to prepare a file on these settlements and submit it to the International Criminal Court in the Hague, accompanied by an urgent call to launch a judicial investigation into what was dubbed as a "war crime", and file it under ethnic cleansing, according to the official Palestinian news agency.

Comment: It has now become obvious to all but the programmed few that Israel not only doesn't have the intention of brokering a lasting peace agreement with Palestinians, but intends to drive them slowly and murderously out of their ancestral lands.

US-led coalition aims to capture Syrian oil instead of fighting Daesh - Deir Ez-Zor Governor

Western countries are taking steps to put Syrian oil and gas resources under their control using the struggle against the Daesh terrorist group(outlawed in many countries) as a pretext for their activities instead of any real struggle against jihadists, the governor of Syria's Deir ez-Zor province told Sputnik in an interview.

"Speaking about the so-called western US coalition, its only goal is to hide the truth from society. At the same time, the situation is becoming clearer and clearer. The European community is starting to understand the complicity of their leaders in support of the terrorists... The main goal [of the Western states] is to establish control over the Syrian economy, first of all [over its] oil and gas resources," Mohammad Ibrahim Samra said.

The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), whose positions were to the north of Deir ez-Zor are acting to the benefit of the United States, the Syrian official added.

"It is not a secret. Even in the struggle against IS [Daesh], for example in [the city of] Raqqa it was nothing more than a theatrical performance. IS was leaving territories and the SDF established control over them and the roles have now changed. This situation has taken place because they are all the allies of the United States and the so-called coalition," the governor said.
