Best of the Web: Would-Be Trump Assassin Palled Around With Neo-Nazi Azov Brigade In Ukraine: What Did The Government Know?

Perhaps the most interesting angle to attempted Trump assassin Ryan Routh's recent history in his Ukraine connection. We documented that when he went to Ukraine to recruit for its International Legion in 2022 he was a Western mainstream media darling for a time, having been quoted on behalf of the cause to get more foreign fighters thrown into the battle against Russia by a who's who of major media sources from FT to Newsweek to the NY Times.

But when he arrived in Ukraine, according to these media reports, the 58-year old Routh himself was considered too old to fight alongside the Ukrainian army. "So plan B," Routh described to one outlet, "was to come to Kiev and promote the idea of many others coming to join the International Legion. We need thousands of people here to fight alongside Ukrainians."

"There are about 190 countries on our planet, and if the governments are not officially sending soldiers here, then we civilians should pick up this torch and make it happen," he described. He had told Newsweek in a video interview from Ukraine that the war with Russia was as simple as "good vs. evil" and essentially the same as good guys and bad guys in the Hollywood movies Americans grew up with. It was not a gray conflict, he described, but "black and white".

Comment: Russia has a theory. Ukraine seems to have a lot to lose from a Trump presidency.

Best of the Web: Inside the mind of the alleged would-be Trump assassin

ryan routh book trump assassin ukraine
In a startling new development, our research team uncovered a book penned by an individual accused of plotting to assassinate former President Donald J. Trump, shedding light on the author's extreme disillusionment with global leadership. The book, titled Ukraine's Unwinnable War: The Fatal Flaw of Democracy, World Abandonment and the Global Citizen-Taiwan, Afghanistan, North Korea and the End of Humanity, is authored by Ryan Routh, a 58-year-old American now linked to a failed assassination attempt on Trump.

The self-published book, which reads like a manifesto, offers a sprawling critique of international leadership, particularly targeting democratic governments for what Routh perceives as their failure to uphold human rights and counter authoritarianism. The author draws direct lines from the conflict in Ukraine to broader geopolitical failures, lambasting world leaders for their perceived apathy and incompetence.

Comment: One gets a full-on Ted Kaczynski/Unibomber vibe, in that he points out of real political problems, but with an unhinged messianic sense of mission. Perfect patsy material.

The burning question is, who put this loon in place?

Best of the Web: Day 3 of the summer snow storm in the European Alps - snowfall in excess of 3 feet

Saturday has brought more snow to the northeastern Alps. As a cold front from the north brings Arctic cold to the Alps, a storm front from Italy is bringing record precipitation to the Alps. Some regions are counting in excess of 1 meter (3 feet) at this stage and it's not letting up. The weather will continue while the snowline will hover between 1,100-1,700 meters (3,600-5,570 feet)

The cold front and snowfall have also surprised migratory birds, which are sadly dying by the thousands. The birds struggle to find shelter from the rain and snow and cannot find insects for survival, leading to death from starvation and exhaustion.

Best of the Web: Day 2 of the summer snowstorm in the European Alps - at least 30 inches of snow thus far

More images are coming from European ski resorts in the northeastern Alps as the low-pressure system is moving across the European Alps. While so far only about 50-75 centimeters (20-30 inches) have fallen so far, the brunt of the snowstorm is yet to come. The next 24 hours are expected to be quite dramatic as 200mm of precipitation is forecast in some regions and 400mm over the next 48 hours.

It is expected that this will come down as snow above 1,000 meters (3,280 feet). Massive snow breakage, avalanches, and mudslides are to be expected in those regions. Remote mountain villages could be cut off for several days from the outside world and basic infrastructure, such as transportation, power, etc., is also under threat. Lower areas are anticipated to be at risk of flashfloods. Local authorities are expecting a century flood for regions in Eastern Europe.

Best of the Web: Sweden to pay migrants $34,000 to go back to home country

Comment: So, 7 years later, was Trump right when he said "did you see what happened in Sweden last night?"...

The Scandinavian nation seen for decades as a ‘humanitarian superpower’ is struggling to integrate many of its newcomers
Sweden plans to boost payments to up to US$34,000 to immigrants who leave the nation that has been a haven for the war-weary and persecuted, the right-wing government said Thursday.

The Scandinavian country was for decades seen as a "humanitarian superpower", but over the years has struggled to integrate many of its newcomers.

Comment: It's pretty clear that some migrants came primarily for the financial benefits and do not intend to integrate: Migrant gang violence spreads to Sweden's middle class suburbs, 140 bomb explosions recorded

Immigrants who voluntarily return to their countries of origin from 2026 would be eligible to receive up to 350,000 Swedish kronor (US$34,000), the government, which is propped up by the anti-immigration Sweden Democrats, told a press conference.

Comment: Given that a lifelong migrant as a resident will cost many times more than $34,000; taking into account the inordinate harm that weaponised mass migration has on the native inhabitants, its culture, and society as a whole; as well as the fact that, actually, the Western establishment is, in part, responsible for the instability on much of the planet, deporting migrants and paying them a sum for their troubles seems to be a cost effective solution:

Best of the Web: The West is ensuring Kiev's demise on purpose

By allowing Ukraine to hit Russia with their missiles, NATO members are enacting a cruel sacrifice to wind down the war

The predictable and predicted is happening again. Despite the coyly teasing dance of seven veils performed by, mostly, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, to those who ignored the noise and focused on the signal, it's always been clear that Washington and London would decide to - officially and openly - allow and help Ukraine to use their missiles for attacks even deeper into Russia than before. And of course, it's been obvious to Moscow as well, as Dmitry Peskov, President Vladimir Putin's spokesman, made clear as early as September 11.

That the West is escalating is no surprise. It has a well-established pattern of continually ratcheting-up the stakes in its proxy war - including (but not restricted to) the supply of intelligence, mercenaries, 'advisors', various tanks, armored vehicles, missile systems, and recently F-16 fighter planes. Now it's time to fully unleash Storm Shadow and then, if perhaps a little later, long-range ATACMS missiles. What we can safely disregard is the pretext of Iran allegedly shipping short-range ballistic missiles to Russia. It's either simply untrue or irrelevant.

Tehran denies the American claim. Those ready to scoff at that should recall that the West has a rock-solid record of making things up, from Iraqi WMDs to Israel's legally strictly non-existing 'right' to defend itself against those it occupies and genocides. And even if Iran has handed over missiles - as, by the way, it would have an actual right to do as a sovereign state - that is not why this specific Western escalation is occurring now.

Update (1230ET): Putin says not so fast...

First, here's a UK Times report within the last hour:
Britain and the United States are on the verge of allowing Ukraine to use long-range missiles against targets in Russia after accusing President Putin of "escalating" the conflict by accepting ballistic missiles from Iran.

David Lammy, the Foreign Secretary, and Anthony Blinken, the US Secretary of State, said they would return to their respective countries to inform their leaders of the "operational details" surrounding Ukraine's use of weapons such as Storm Shadow missiles after meeting President Zelensky in Kyiv.

Blinken promised to work quickly on Ukraine's requests to ease the restrictions, saying he would take what he had learnt "back to President Biden."

Putin escalating conflict, say western allies as missile approval moves closer
President Putin is currently speaking at the St. Petersburg International United Cultures Forum, which addresses current events related to Russia. He issued the following red line while speaking to a reporter on the sidelines of the conference Thursday:
Long-range arms for Kyiv would mean 'NATO countries at war with Russia'

Best of the Web: Case closed! Brigitte Macron is a WOMAN, declares Paris court

brigitte macron
"It's MA'AM!"
Amandine Roy and Natacha Rey will have to pay €8,000 in damages to France's first lady and €5,000 to her brother Jean-Michel Trogneux.

Two women who spread a rumor online that French First Lady Brigitte Macron was a transgender woman were ordered two women to pay damages on Thursday, September 12, by the Paris Criminal Court for defamation.

Comment: Spread a rumor online? One of them - the journalist Natacha Rey - wrote a lengthy book, while the other interviewed her about it!

They received a suspended fine of €500 and were ordered to pay a total of €8,000 in damages to the wife of the French president and €5,000 to her brother Jean-Michel Trogneux, both plaintiffs at the trial held last June. Macron, who was absent from the trial, was not present for the decision either.

Comment: To be clear, Jean-Michel Trogneux has still never been seen in public.

The two women spear a theory that has resurfaced regularly on social media since the election of Emmanuel Macron in 2017, according to which Brigitte Macron, née Trogneux, never existed, but that her brother Jean-Michel took on this identity after undergoing a sex change.

Comment: Not quite. Brigitte existed but the theory goes that she died in youth under strange circumstances, never had a death cert issued, and whose identity was later assumed by her brother Jean-Michel.

The claim went viral just weeks before the 2022 presidential election. Posts spread on social media claiming that the first lady, formerly Brigitte Trogneux, had never existed and that her brother Jean-Michel had changed gender and assumed that identity.

Comment: The two women are apparently going to appeal the decision. What they could also do is agree to pay the fines only if Jean-Michel Trogneux agrees to accept his cheque in person. And crowdfund to generate public support for a campaign to "meet Jean-Michel!"

Best of the Web: Hailstorms in Europe have increased 267% in the past five years: Chaucer insurance co.

nnnnnnnnn
Climate change is seen as a driver of higher frequency of damaging hail storm events according to specialty re/insurer Chaucer, who highlights a 267% increase in European hail storms in the past five years.

Hail and other severe weather perils have been causing increasing amounts of insurance and reinsurance market loss over the last few years.

There have been repeated years of damaging hail impacts across countries such as France, Germany and Italy, some of which have driven losses through to the reinsurance layer of the industry.

It's the increasing frequency that has made these challenging in the space and like in the United States reinsurance capital has retrenched higher, to avoid more of these types of losses, while also providing less sideways or aggregate protection as well.

Having analysed the European Severe Weather Database, Chaucer said that the number of hailstorms has jumped 104% to 11,808 storms last year (year-ending June 30th 2024), up from 5,785 in 2022/23.

Best of the Web: On Being a "Threat to Democracy"

Democracy
Merriam-Webster defines "democracy" as: "a: Government by the people especially : rule of the majority, b: a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections."

Well, that sounds good. Do we have a rule of the majority? The majority of Americans, after all, about eighty percent of them, are losing in this rigged economy, and living paycheck to paycheck at best. I don't think they're "ruling" anything. We all (well, some of us) know that the 10th Amendment to the Constitution clearly states, "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people." Again, sounds good. But when's the last time you heard about one of our tyrannical judges ruling in favor of someone invoking the 10th Amendment? Since the Constitution delineates very limited powers to the central government, this should mean that the vast majority of power in this country resides in the States, or the people.
