China aims to boost chip production despite US restrictions - FT

Chinese chipmakers expect to make next-generation smartphone processors as early as this year despite U.S. efforts to curb their development of advanced technologies, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday.

Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC), the country's top chipmaker, has put together new semiconductor production lines in Shanghai to mass produce chips designed by Huawei, the report said, citing people familiar with the move.

SMIC is aiming to use its existing stock of U.S. and Dutch-made equipment to produce 5-nanometre chips, it added.

Huawei and SMIC did not immediately reply to Reuters' request for comment.

U.S. companies are restricted by Washington from providing technology to SMIC without a special license because its alleged work with China's military is considered a threat to American national security.

Faced with these restrictions, the Chinese government has been investing heavily to develop a self-reliant semiconductor supply chain.

codis Pretty much. I heard about the release of their new phones using these new 5nm chips they developed, and apparently it's shockingly good.... scarily good.... or so hearsay goes.

This has been going on for a while. The whole sanctions on washing machine chips, etc because "Chinese Military"... and the whole Taiwan schtick makes sense when you remember that they are the world's largest semiconductor source [Link]

The global shortage of chips that forced several automakers to halt production has brought attention to Taiwan’s outsized role in semiconductor manufacturing.

Taiwan dominates the foundry market, or the outsourcing of semiconductor manufacturing.

Much of that dominance comes down to TSMC, the world’s largest foundry that counts major technology firms such as Apple, Qualcomm and Nvidia as its clients.

The military is a somewhat different business. Look up IS datasheets, even old ones. The "military" spec. is an extension of the automotive spec. which is an extension of the "industrial" spec. Temperature range, maximal values/tolerances, and EMI hardness.

As I heard, the Russians (and I think the Chinese as well) achieve the required computing throughput for e.g. their longrange missiles by massively parallel structures of medium scale, not things like 5nm chips. Reliability and failure tolerance are very critical in this regard (- unless you sell the weapons to customers you despise ... :)).

Yes, it were about 100, rarely 200 shots, until the barrel was too deformed to hit something. And often causing barrel-bursts. No problem when you shoot at goat herders with AK-47, and can draw infinite amounts of tax money.

First-world nations with proper militaries (Russia, China, India, Iran) have interconnected radar stations, there is no such thing as "stealthyness" anymore. The deflected radar waves are catched by one or more other receivers.

And in all other regards, the F-35 is even nominally inferior to previous models, let alone potential adversaries (weapon capacity, range, speed).

Its most unique characteristic, besides the abysmal reliability, is its sales price. But who cares, if you don't plan towage war against a real adversary with proper air defense ...

Despite the US' attempts to maintain an unfair advantage by sanctioning competitors, it is losing the tech competition - and will continue to do so.

It hasn't yet realised that China, and other countries too, have equally capable innovators, developers and scientists who don't need US technology to develop next generation products.
