Every spring, a "dead zone" appears in the Gulf of Mexico. It happens when the water doesn't have enough oxygen to support fish and other marine life.
And scientists say this year's dead zone is the biggest they've recorded since mapping began in 1985.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced this week that the Gulf dead zone measured in at more than 8,700 square miles — an area roughly the size of New Jersey.
Dead zones can occur naturally. But researchers say the Gulf's problem is mainly caused by nutrient pollution from agriculture.
Here's how. Farmers use fertilizer in their fields, but rain washes it into nearby streams and rivers. When those waters reach the Gulf of Mexico, they stimulate algae growth. That algae eventually dies and sinks to the bottom of the ocean, using up the oxygen marine life needs to thrive.
NOAA explains it like this: "The very fertilizers that are helping our crops are disrupting the food chain and devastating our food sources in the ocean."
And researchers say shrinking the annual dead zone would require big changes in the agriculture industry aimed at reducing the nutrient pollution that flows to the ocean.
It must be terryfying to be a child growing up in this world. What do the children have to look forward to other than being saddled with debt when there is a whole world to try to fix.
Meanwhile elderly career politicians and Royalty who had the power to make change, cling to power purely for the ability to micro manage others for personal wealth and facilitate ongoing damage.
Like John Lennon said (see SOTTS daily quote), this is insanity.
The shame of this story is that we have the resources to correct this dead zone. The fact that we are not even attempting to in any meaningful way suggests we don't really care.
Anna1 The ones that do care don't have the resources to do it. The government doesn't care it's the depopulation agenda have you looked at the mass die offs of fish and animals in the last few months. If things die and they can't feed the population then who's to blame not the government but ...................................
Anna1 The dead zone is in part due to the bp spill a few years ago and what they put into the water to eat the oil but pay attention to what's happening all over the world with the flooding everywhere the crop loss the gulf is just a small part of what's going on. UV rays are off the charts crop loss is at an all time high the Grand Solar Minimum that is coming is going to be one of the worst disasters that will happen to mankind the oceans are heating up due to the underwater volcanos constantly going off The UV rays are burning the fish and causing cancer in humans the likes never seen before. Couple sites for you to check out mrmbb333, bpearthwatch there's more but these may give you some insight.....take care
@jim24...the sun is white hot now, but when the clouds block it, the temperature drops right down...there's no warmth, just burning and then cool. It's very odd. Here in Devon UK, we've been getting what seem to be pulses of cloud/rain and sun, very regular...I've not known a year like it. And the weirdest thing, our Buddleias, our neighbours Buddleias, have all flowered white this year as opposed to the various shades of purple they have been for the past 5 years and more...still waiting for info on that, but here at home we all thought we had lost the plot when we noticed!
I've decided to build a bunker and take up knitting...I see no other option...
The situation for life on Earth looks desperate.
