Putin and Iranian President Rouhani strengthen united front on Syria

Both leaders pledged their commitment to aid Syria in the fight against terrorism and to work together to stabilize the volatile region.

Fake news reports on Russia and Iran preparing to retaliate against the illegal US missile attack on Syria are filling the web, but this could not be further from reality.

In a telephone call between Presidents Hassan Rouhani and Vladimir Putin, Russia and Iran have pledged to remain committed to aiding Syria in the fight against terrorism.

According to the Kremlin's Press Service,

"On the initiative of the Iranian party a phone conversation between Vladimir Putin and President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Hassan Rouhani was held. ... [The presidents] exchanged their views of the situation in Syria. Both parties pointed out the inadmissibility of US aggressive actions against the sovereign state in violation of the international law. Putin and Rouhani called for holding an objective, impartial investigation of all circumstances of the incident involving chemical weapons in the Syrian province of Idlib on April 4".

The statement continued,

"The Leaders also noted the importance to continue close cooperation on political and diplomatic settlement of the armed conflict in Syria".

Contrary to the views of John McCain, Iran and Russia are not going to simply do nothing in the wake of the US attack on Syria, but nor are they going to counter-attack on the US or any state allied to the US.

The two also agreed that the US strike on Syria was a "pre-planned attack on an independent and sovereign state, aimed at slowing down the victories of the Syrian Army and its allies, while only raising the morale of the terrorists and their supporters," adding that "the US narrative on Khan Sheikhoun incident is extremely doubtful and that the Syrian proposal to establish an independent commission that will investigate the incident, can only reveal the ugly reality of manipulations and distortions".

President Rouhani said that this aggression constitutes a blatant violation of the Syrian sovereignty and all the international laws and conventions.

The Iranian President stressed that Iran stands by the Syrian state in its war against terrorism and in the initiatives it proposes to find a peaceful solution to the crisis in Syria that would lead to stopping the bloodshed of the Syrians. For his part, President al-Assad affirmed that the US failed in achieving the goal behind this attack which is raising the morale of the US-backed terrorist gangs.

He affirmed that the Syrian people and army are determined to eliminate terrorism in every part of the Syrian territories. President al-Assad thanked the Iranian leadership and people for their continued standing by the Syrian people in the face of the terrorist war which is backed by many Western and regional states".

The two leaders also expressed readiness to deepen cooperation in the fight against terrorism to ensure stability in the Middle East.

"Particular importance was paid to the key aspects of the bilateral cooperation in the sphere of counterterrorism, a readiness to deepen cooperation in order to ensure stability in the Middle East was expressed," the statement said.
