Russian warplanes resumed heavy bombardment of rebel-held eastern Aleppo after several days of relative calm.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least eight civilians were killed in the Bustan al-Qasr and Fardos districts in the besieged city of Aleppo, where around 250,000 remained trapped.

"This is the heaviest Russian bombardment since the Syrian regime announced it would reduce the bombardment" on October 5, said Rami Abdel Rahman, the head of the London-based monitoring group.

On October 5, the Syrian Army said it would reduce its bombardment of eastern Aleppo and urged civilians to distance themselves from rebel fighters.

Backed by Russian air strikes, Syrian government forces have advanced into rebel-held areas in a bid to recapture the whole of Aleppo, the country's second-largest city.

The observatory said at least 290 people, mostly civilians, have been killed by government or Russian air strikes since the operation to retake Aleppo began on September 22.
