San Francisco's Civic Center and UN Plaza have been evacuated while police deal with a man who is understood to be armed with a semi-automatic handgun, according to local media.

Full details as to what is unfolding in the area are still emerging but all motorists and pedestrians have been forced to leave the area, according ABC-owned Bay Area station KGO.

Police are understood to have their guns drawn, monitoring the suspect, who is wearing a green shirt or jacket.

The suspect has previously threatened "suicide by cop," according to local CBS affiliate KPIX.


Local San Francisco firefighters tweeted that the Civic Center has been "shut down" and the UN Plaza "cleared out" due to a "man with a gun". They've asked people to "avoid the area" as a result.


A SWAT team has arived at the scene to deal with what police have called a "critical incident," while a hostage negotiator is also understood to have been called in to help resolve the situation.
