Sex robot brothels similar to those seen in Channel's 4's eerie cyborg drama Humans could soon become a reality in the UK, it has been claimed.

Rapidly-improving technology could herald a revolution in the UK's sex industry which could result in reduced risk of sexually transmitted diseases and safer lives for I working girls, clients and pimps.

NUI Galway Law professor John Danaher, who has conducted research into human enhancement and artificial intelligence, said sex robots could be a good substitute for human prostitutes.

He told the Daily Star : "The cyborgs can cater for desire for sexual variety, freedom from constraint and complication and fear of lack of sexual success.

"Technology may become better at developing emotional bonds with their clients. They won't need to 'fake it' the same way as human prostitutes."

Mr Danaher said the "completely legal" practice could even even stamp out sexual slavery and trafficking as the robot's would be cheaper than human prostitutes

Sex robots could also reduce the risk of spreading STDs, Danaher said.

In Channel 4's recent series Humans synth Niska is assigned to work as a prostitute, but she escapes the brothel where she works after killing one of her clients.

While the idea of robot brothels is still in its early stages, it's believed sex tourism hotspots such as Amsterdam's red light district and Thailand will take on the sex robots in their droves.

Human-robot sex is set to become common place within the next decade - with many people claiming they would happily have sex with a robot instead of a human.

Matt McMullen, CEO of RealDoll, revealed the next step in making high-end sex toys will be to give them AI to replicate humans more closely than ever.

"We are building an AI system which can either be connected to a robotic doll OR experienced in a VR environment," he revealed as part of an AMA (ask me anything) on Reddit .

"I think it will allow for an option that never existed before, and for some, may represent a happiness they [users] never thought they could have."
