Four of Rafale and Mirage 2000 fighters together with one Atlantique 2 aircraft dropped a dozen of SCALP cruise missiles at the facility which, the Ministry said, was at the heart of the Daesh-controlled territory.

"On Sunday, 21 2016, a French air raid struck at the Daesh center for storing and maintaining heavy equipment in Raqqa, Syria," the ministerial statement read.

The mission followed a week of intense bombardments by the French Air Force which is operating in Syria as part of a US-led international coalition, whose stated goal is to roll back the Daesh terror group.

French jets are also providing air support to Iraqi and Kurdish troops near Mosul in Iraq. The French military said the airstrikes, targeting Daesh control centers, arms depots and chemical labs, were in preparation for ground assaults on Mosul and Raqqa.
