About 35 years ago I "went vegetarian" for about a year - on "cruelty to animal" grounds - but came to realize that it was impossible to be consistent, e.g. I wore shoes made of leather and ate eggs, cheese and other products which, one way or another, involved questionable "animal rights" issues.
Right now I know a woman who claims to be "vegetarian", but eats fish ... since when did fish cease being animals? Since when was fishing a "humanitarian" enterprise?
As for alcohol, the yeast used in fermentation kinda straddles the divide between animal and vegetable ... OK that's being a bit silly or obtuse, but it illustrates my point that it's impossible to be consistent at whatever level one tries to "do the right thing". Same with any other religion/ideology, don't you think?
