A 4.0 magnitude earthquake was recorded close to central California's border with Nevada early on Saturday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) has reported.

The quake struck at 04:42AM local time (12:42PM GMT) and struck at a shallow depth of 9.8 km (6.1 miles).

The epicentre was located at Antelope Mountain on the eastern edge of the Yosemite National Forest, about 40 km (25 miles) NNE (15°) from Toms Place, CA; 45 km (28 miles) S (184°) from Qualeys Camp, NV; 47 km (29 miles) NE (51°) from Mammoth Lakes, CA; and 264 km (164 miles) ESE (105°) from Sacramento, CA.

A magnitude 4 earthquake also struck close to California's border with Nevada last Friday. The quake's epicentre was located in Death Valley National Park, approximately 20 km (13 miles) SW from Scottys Castle, CA; 49 km (30 miles) SSW (208°) from Tokop, NV; 57 km (35 miles) SSE (161°) from Sylvania, NV; 62 km (38 miles) NE (53°) from Lone Pine, CA; 84 km (52 miles) NNE (31°) from Olancha, CA; and 220 km (137 miles) WNW (292°) from Las Vegas, NV.

Nevada also was hit by an earthquake measuring 4.5 magnitude on the Richter Scale on 01 October last. The quake was centred 9 km (6 miles) SE from Schurz and 35 km (22 miles) WSW from Rawhide, NV.
