A 25-year-old Kelowna, B.C., resident is dead in what police are calling a "car-surfing" accident.

RCMP Staff Sgt. Terry McLachlan said the accident happened just after 1 a.m. PT Saturday on a forest service road in West Kelowna.

McLachlan said the man had been "car-surfing" on top of a vehicle being driven by a 27-year-old male friend.

The driver lost control of the car, McLachlan said, and the vehicle tumbled down a 17-metre embankment.

The 25-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 27-year-old driver was taken into custody and could be charged with criminal negligence causing death.

Police are investigating whether drugs or alcohol were a factor in the accident.

The B.C. Coroner's Service and the RCMP are investigating.

Anyone with information is asked to contact RCMP Const. Chad Lucash at 250-980-5353.
