Spain has been hit by a new flooding disaster as a torrential deluge has sent cars floating down the street in Girona.

Footage shows a raging torrent of water carrying away everything in its path including several vehicles as it swept through the centre of the Catalan town of Cadaques this morning.

Today residents woke up to a new scene of destruction, with mayor Pia Serinyana revealing a total of 32 cars had been washed away by the flood water caused by a nearby river overflowing.

Many ended up piled on top of each other by a bridge in front of the town casino, with at least one of the smashed-up vehicles appearing to belong to foreign tourists because of the number plates that were clearly visible.

This comes just over a week after another flooding disaster hit Spain, in particular the Valencia region, with more than 200 people confirmed to have died.

Cuba suffered a nationwide blackout on Wednesday as Hurricane Rafael brought winds of up to 185km/h (115mph) to the Caribbean island.

The country's national energy company said strong winds had caused the shutdown of the electricity system.

At least 70,000 people were evacuated from their homes before the category three storm made landfall on Wednesday evening with warnings of storm surges, flash flooding, and mudslides.

It comes just weeks after millions were left without power for four days following a blackout caused by issues with the country's creaking energy infrastructure. The incident also coincided with Hurricane Oscar, which killed at least six people.

At least five people were killed after torrential rainfall led to flash flooding in central and eastern Missouri, impacting transportation and making it challenging for some voters to reach their polling place on Tuesday.

According to the St. Louis County Police Department, preliminary investigations revealed that one of the victims, identified as an adult female, drove her car into floodwaters in the area of Interstate 55 and Bayless Avenue in St. Louis Tuesday morning as the worst of the flash flooding was ongoing.

Five other vehicles were also discovered after the flooding had subsided, but the occupants were able to escape. However, the Affton Fire Protection District confirmed another death associated with the flooding along Gravois Creek in the area.

Overnight storms have triggered floods and landslides in south-western Norway, local media reported on Friday, the latest country in Europe to be hit by severe weather.

The rainfall subsided on Friday morning, meteorologist Julie Solsvik Vågane told broadcaster NRK, but flood and landslide warnings remain in place.

So far no one has been reported missing or injured due to the storms, according to police.

Access to the town of Odda - home to some 5,000 people some 60 kilometres south-east of Bergen - was cut off on Friday morning after a bridge collapsed. All other access roads to the town were closed due to the storms.

The mayor of Odda described the situation as "dramatic" when speaking to news agency NTB on Thursday evening.
