Heavy monsoon rains have led the mighty Brahmaputra River to overflow its banks and submerge scores of villages in India's remote northeastern state of Assam.

District magistrate Anwaruddin Chowdhury says more than 150,000 people have been hit by floods in three districts of northern Assam.

Chowdhury said Sunday at least one person died after he was swept away by the strong current when he jumped in the river to try to rescue his cattle.

Relief agencies are distributing rice, lentils and salt to tens of thousands of people in temporary shelters set up in schools, offices and other government buildings.

US: Minnesota: Heavy rains flood neighborhoods, metro roads

Heavy rains flooded metro neighborhoods and roads, including a half-mile stretch of Interstate 35W near Interstate 694.

Crews closed that section of the well-traveled freeway early Saturday morning, after receiving reports of stalled vehicles. Both directions of I-35W were reopened by around 9:30 p.m.

"With the intense rains we had overnight, the overflow ponds have overflown onto the freeway," said Trooper Kyle Klawiter of the Minnesota State Patrol.

North Carolina, US: Flash flood slams Cherokee hatchery

Thousands of fish were killed when a wall of water swept through the Cherokee Fish Hatchery.

The flash flood washed many of the young trout out of the raceways where they were being raised as well as taking down about 75 feet of fence surrounding the facility, hatchery supervisor Doug Reed said.

The hatchery has about 800,000 fish at any one time. Reed said Saturday he and other workers were still trying to determine how many had been killed as they cleaned up the mess. He estimated the damage at about $30,000-$50,000.

"It overflowed the raceways and poured the fish out onto the ground," he said. "It washed leaves and sticks into the raceways."

The media center in the Jefferson High School building in Alexandria was left soaked and soggy following the rain downpour Friday morning.

Kim Fuchs said people near Alexandria Recreational Vehicles on Highway 29 were forced to use a paddle boat to get to the mailbox.

KSAX viewers sent in pictures of what appeared to be significant flooding near the St. Agnes School in Osakis.

Kansas City, Missouri - The swollen Missouri River was swamping more farmland in Missouri on Wednesday as federal officials began to prepare for a gradual reduction in water releases from a key dam starting later in July.

Residents from Montana through Missouri have built flood barriers and evacuated homes for more than a thousand miles over the last two months as melting snow and heavy rains overwhelmed six reservoirs on the Upper Missouri River.

Federal officials have released water from the dams at double previous record rates, straining levees through the North and South Dakota capitals down along the borders of Nebraska, Iowa and Kansas and across Missouri.

Iceland: Glacier flood confirmed from Vatnajökull glacier, flood is from Hamarinn volcano (Loki-Fögrufjöll area)

The harmonic tremor that started yesterday has been confirmed to be coming from Hamarinn volcano (Bárðarbunga volcano), but they are also known as Loki-Fögrufjöll in GVP database.

So far there is nothing that indicates an eruption is taking place at the moment in Hamarinn volcano. But that might change without warning. At the moment nobody is sure where the glacier flood is coming from. But this appears to be a new area of hydrothermal activity in Hamarinn volcano that is releasing water at the moment. This new hydrothermal area is most likely created by new dike intrusions into the bed rock in the affected area. There are no pictures of the affected area, as the area is impassible to air plains at the moment due to cloud cover or fog. Lack of earthquakes also makes it hard to locate the source of this glacier flood.

Currently the glacier flood has peaked and is getting lower. There not expected to be any damage from this glacier flood on human structures or roads. This area of Iceland is unpopulated. The water is going into large lakes in the area where the effects of this glacier flood are almost none. The glacier flood did flow into a dam lake that is collecting water from rivers that this glacier flood did go into. This did make the lake rise about 70 cm in several hours and fill it. No damage is expected from this glacier flood to the dam or other structures in this area connected to the dam. But it is estimated that 26 gigaliters did flow into the dam lake during the night from this glacier flood.

On Tuesday torrential rain flooded many roads in Sundsvall on the eastern coast of Sweden, a major power outage in the area was caused by the ensuing thunderstorms and a man in his sixties was taken to hospital after being struck by lightning.

Emergency services in Sundsvall are now putting all their efforts into draining the infrastructure. Head of local emergency services, Mats Granat, is counting on being busy all night - if the weather clears.

"If the rains continue we'll be working much longer," he told news agency TT.

So far the water level hasn't risen enough to pose a threat to the general public, according to Granat.

Homes, businesses and cars have been hit by flooding during a heavy downpour across Edinburgh.

Witnesses have been reporting cars floating in deep rivers running down roads in Morningside, Colinton and Oxgangs.

One resident in Balcarres Street said her ground-floor-flat had been ruined following the flash flood at 1440 BST.

Emergency council teams have been deployed in a bid to help firefighters deal with the "huge volumes of water".

A resident in Balcarres Street added that the fish in her pond in her front garden had been washed away in the flood water.

A 31-year-old witness said: "I have never seen anything like it. There was such a huge volume of water in Balcarres Street that buses were trying to plough through it and the wake was causing the cars at the side of the road to crash into each other.

"There is also a car showroom in the street, which has been flooded."
