Volunteers deliver food and water to stranded Penampang residents after landslides and heavy rain cut off roads.
Nearly a quarter of a million people were left without electricity over the weekend in Malaysia's Sabah state after torrential rain triggered landslides that killed at least one person and took out a transmission tower that cut power across a large area.

Footage shared widely on social media showed the tower leaning precariously after it was hit by a landslide in the district of Penampang on the state's west coast on Saturday evening.

The incident cut power supply to six districts in Sabah's east coast, including the town of Sandakan, over 300km (186 miles) away.

State power company Sabah Electricity said power had been gradually restored in some parts of the affected areas on Sunday, but other parts of the state on Malaysia in northern Borneo remained without energy on Monday.

Malaysia has been struggling to deal with extreme weather events in recent years, as the climate crisis worsens droughts and rains, decimating crops and damaging homes and public infrastructure.

Rescuers have recovered two bodies after a landslide buried six people near a girder bridge at Kilometer 31 in the remote village of Mahayahay, San Luis town on Sunday evening, September 14.

Barangay chairperson Sergio Manlomate told radio reporter Ranelo "Boy" Abad of government-run DXGP 89.7 FM that the landslide was triggered after a driver of a "Saddam" truck tried to pull out a fallen tree blocking the road to the bridge, inadvertently loosening massive rocks and mud from the mountainside.

A "Saddam" truck is a colloquial term for an old 6 x 6 military truck used to carry workers of logging companies that operated in the 1980s in the hinterlands of San Luis.

A joint retrieval team composed of local police, Army soldiers, and personnel from the Municipal isaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) recovered the remains of a boy identified as John Paul Abunda, and Junard Gonzales, a truck driver.

Heavy rains batter Italy, triggering floods, travel disruptions

MMMM
Heavy rainfall has swept across Italy in the past 24 hours, triggering floods, landslides and transport disruptions, with northern and central regions among the worst affected, reported Xinhua.

The severe weather followed a 24-hour nationwide warning issued by the Italian Civil Protection Department for thunderstorms, hail and strong winds. The agency also placed five regions under an orange alert, the second-highest level for hydrogeological risk. The alert covered parts of Lombardy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Tuscany, as well as the entire regions of Lazio and Umbria. Southern areas, including Palermo and Trapani in Sicily, faced lower risk levels but remained on alert for flooding and related hazards.

On Elba Island off the coast of Tuscany, a violent thunderstorm inundated the main town of Portoferraio on Tuesday, temporarily isolating around 200 residents, local authorities said. Although floodwaters began to recede late Wednesday, Mayor Tiziano Nocentini urged residents to stay indoors and warned of possible new storms overnight. He noted that it was the fourth extreme weather event to hit the island in less than six months.

Flash floods that struck two provinces in Indonesia this week have killed at least 19 people, according to disaster mitigation officials, with operations under way to search for the missing.

Torrential rains beginning on Monday caused flooding and landslides on the tourist island of Bali and in East Nusa Tenggara province.

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto ordered his aides to accelerate the handling of the aftermath of the deadly flooding, locate the missing and deliver basic needs to displaced residents, Antara state news agency reported on Thursday.

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency, BNPB, reported that 400 to 600 personnel from various institutions had been deployed to search for the missing and clear debris.

Rain caused rivers to burst their banks, tearing through nine cities and districts on Bali. Mud, rocks and trees tumbled onto mountainside hamlets and rising rivers submerged at least 120 neighbourhoods, resulting in a dozen landslides in several places, BNPB spokesperson Abdul Muhari said in a statement.
