Best of the Web: "Get the hell out of there" - Ohio's apocalyptic chemical disaster rages on

ohio train derailment toxic chemicals burning
The toxic chemicals released in the train derailment in Ohio pose a threat to the health and safety of local residents
Update (1300ET): During a press conference, the NTSB referenced a video from Salem, Ohio, about 20 miles from East Palestine which shows sparks and flames emitting from beneath the train. The apparent structural issue with the train was captured on a security camera when it was travelling through Salem. According to Michael Graham, board member on the NTSB, two videos they had obtained were indicative of mechanical issues attributed to the rail car axles which likely led to the derailment.

The second video obtained from when the train was passing through Salem was recorded by a processing plant nearby a hotbox detector which scans the temperature of the axles as trains pass by. According to Graham, the wayside defect detector reading resulted in an alarm alerting the crew of a mechanical issue shortly before the derailment in East Palestine. Consequently, that alert forced the train to execute an emergency brake application which may have been the cause of the derailment. Presently, the NTSB is reviewing the trains data and audio recordings in order to examine the cause of the derailment and which hotbox detector indicated a mechanical error preceding the accident. The NTSB is expected to issue a preliminary report on its findings within 30 days.

Disney officially loses control of Reedy Creek development in landslide Florida senate vote

Iger
© The StreetDisney CEO Bob Iger
Last year Disney waged political war with the state of Florida and Governor Ron DeSantis and has suffered an overwhelming defeat. The company has officially lost control of their Reedy Creek Development - First devised as an unprecedented agreement with Disney to allow it to act unilaterally in business development within the 25,000 acre park with limited government oversight. The decision to dissolve Reedy Creek's original management was finalized after a landslide senate vote this week to appoint a new governing board.

Disney has stated that it does not plan to fight the state ruling in court, probably because they know it is a losing battle. The new entity, dubbed the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District, will be operated by a five-member board appointed by DeSantis and confirmed by the state Senate. The move effectively gives DeSantis power over operations including collecting taxes.

Disney World is set to rely even more on its theme park revenues as its movies and streaming service continue to flounder.

Nearly 1 million demonstrators poured into the streets across France Saturday, to protest the government's pension reform plans, which would include raising the retirement age from 62 to 64.

In Paris, police clashed with demonstrators and lobbed tear-gas during a fourth day of national protests, as union organizers hoped to exceed the mass turnout on Jan. 19 when more than a million people took to the streets during a day of national strikes that resulted in school and transportation shutdowns.

Early estimates suggested that numbers of protestors in Paris had already increased by more than 20 percent since a similar demonstration in the capital on Tuesday, according to Le Figaro.

The French Interior Ministry said that 963,000 people took part in demonstrations across the country, BFM reported.

One man was killed following a collision with an oncoming train in southeastern Texas, causing more than a dozen cars to derail in one of two similar accidents on Monday. Another incident in South Carolina saw three cars come off the tracks.

The crash occurred in Splendora, Texas early Monday morning, according to the East Montgomery County Fire Department. While the authorities do not know how the collision with the 18-wheeler truck took place, local media have identified the victim as Michael Floran, 57.

"When the train impacted the cab it drug the trailer, cab, and everything all down the tracks about a half mile down the tracks," Splendora Police Chief Wally Wieghat said. "The 18-wheeler was totally destroyed. It's just pieces of it scattered up and down the railroad track."

The 15-minute city: A climate solution? Or just an 'excuse for more control'?

15 minute city
The "15-minute city" made headlines this month, spurred by controversy over plans by the U.K.'s Oxfordshire County Council to pilot "traffic filters" to reduce car use as part of the city of Oxford's 2040 development strategy.

Under the filter plan, Oxfordshire will be divided into six districts. Beginning in 2024, residents will be able to drive within their neighborhoods, but license plate recognition cameras will fine private cars ยฃ70 for passing a filter without a permit. Vehicles such as bikes and public transportation will be exempt.

Residents can apply for a permit to drive through the filters up to 100 days per year, and residents living outside the zones can apply for a permit for up to 25 times per year. The filters will be in effect daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Oakland radical anti-police activist dies after being violently robbed

Jen Angel Oakland
An anarchist bakery owner in Oakland, California who believes in the abolishment of law enforcement has died after sustaining severe injuries during a violent attempted robbery on Monday. Jen Angel, 48, was dragged for nearly fifty feet after struggling with two men in a vehicle who tried to steal her purse.

Angel was a self-described "anarchist" and an avid social justice advocate, and had a strict policy of never calling the police. In a GoFundMe organized to cover expenses, her family said that if police locate the suspects, they are "committed to pursuing all available alternatives to traditional prosecution, such as restorative justice."

According to CBS News, at around 12:30 pm Monday, the suspects broke into Angel's vehicle while she was inside and grabbed her purse. She got out and ran after them, but got stuck in the door of their getaway vehicle and was dragged down the street. She was immediately rushed to the hospital, but the medical team soon revealed she was unlikely to survive.

Jesus ads promote 'fascism', says loony toon Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

© Andrew Harnik-Pool / Getty ImagesRep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez declared in 2019 that the world would end in 12 years if measures weren't enacted to address climate change.
Two commercials that played during Sunday's American football Super Bowl presented Jesus Christ as a persecuted migrant and a champion of diversity. Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez argued they promoted "fascism."

"Something tells me Jesus would not spend millions of dollars on Super Bowl ads to make fascism look benign," the New York Democrat tweeted on Sunday evening.

The two commercials were titled 'Refugee' and 'Love Your Enemies', and were commissioned by 'He Gets Us', at a reported cost of $20 million. One uses the footage of migrants from Latin America to compare them to the Christian savior, while the other admonishes Christians that he "loved the people we hate."

Despite gas pipeline fire in Russia's Yaroslavl, flow continues

gas russia
Depressurisation of an export gas pipeline transiting the Myshkinsky district of the Yaroslavl region north of Moscow sparked a fire but caused no casualties on Monday, Russia's emergencies ministry said.

Russia's state-owned RIA news agency quoted the press office of the local unit of the Russian energy giant Gazprom, Gazprom Transgaz Ukhta, as saying gas transit was sustained in full through parallel pipelines.

"At this time, the fire has been extinguished," the ministry for emergency situations said on its Telegram channel. "There were no casualties or damage. The incident did not affect gas supply to the population."

Comment: They may be ruling out sabotage but one can understand why that would be suspected, because there have been a significant number of fires and explosions in Russia recently that were most likely due to foul play: Huge fire at industrial estate in Russian city of Vladivostok

Over 500,000 protestors in Madrid over deteriorating state of public healthcare, marks 2nd protest this year amidst 'indefinite strike' by doctors

madrid protest

Hundreds of thousands of people flooded the streets of the Spanish capital on Sunday to protest what they say is the crumbling public healthcare system in the region of Madrid.

Government figures estimate that around 250,000 participated in the protest, while organizers claimed up to a million people took part to express their outrage.

Comment: Governments repeatedly underestimate those in attendance, and for obvious reason, and a reasonable estimate would probably be around at least 500,000 people.

This is the second massive protest over public healthcare in Madrid since November - the same month that family doctors and pediatricians began an indefinite strike that shows no sign of ending.

Comment: France topped those attendance numbers with a protest just a few weeks ago: France rocked by protests as 2 MILLION march against government reforms in 2nd wave of mass strikes to hit this month

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe says province will not go along with national healthcare 'digital ID'

ScottMoe
© UnknownSaskatchewan Premier Scott Moe
Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe said his government will "not" participate in any type of national healthcare "digital ID" program as a condition to receive funding for health care from the federal government.

In an open letter to the public released last week, Moe wrote:
"The Government of Saskatchewan is not creating a digital ID, nor will we accept any requirements for the creation of a digital ID tied to healthcare funding."
In Canada, as per the constitution, health care falls 100 percent under the authority of the provincial governments, however, some federal money is transferred to provinces, but this amount has been in decline in recent years. There has been some talk that future federal funding could be tied to a sort of national healthcare "digital ID."

Moe flat-out rejected that Saskatchewan would take any money from the federal government should a digital ID be on the table:
"The Government of Saskatchewan will not share any personal medical information with the federal government. This information is protected under The Health Information Protection Act and will remain so." The only information that his government shares with the feds when it comes to health care are public healthcare statistics.

"The Government of Saskatchewan may share already publicly available healthcare statistics, including the number of physicians in Saskatchewan and surgical wait times if requested by any party, including the federal government. The Government of Saskatchewan will not surrender or weaken any personal health privacy rights when signing a new Canada Health Transfer agreement."

Comment: What is the public's vote on implementing a mandatory digital ID system? They don't get one.
