Best of the Web: Override: Inside the revolution rewiring America power

trump oval office graphic
The clock struck 2 AM on Jan 21, 2025.

In Treasury's basement, fluorescent lights hummed above four young coders. Their screens cast blue light across government-issue desks, illuminating energy drink cans and agency badges. As their algorithms crawled through decades of payment data, one number kept growing: $17 billion in redundant programs. And counting.

"We're in," Akash Bobba messaged the team. "All of it."

Edward Coristine's code had already mapped three subsystems. Luke Farritor's algorithms were tracing payment flows across agencies. Ethan Shaotran's analysis revealed patterns that career officials didn't even know existed. By dawn, they would understand more about Treasury's operations than people who had worked there for decades.

This wasn't a hack. This wasn't a breach. This was authorized disruption.

Comment: Let's hope these brave words prove true. The beginnings are encouraging.

And hopefully there will be support for those affected by the chemical spill in East Palestine, Ohio.

Best of the Web: The blitzkrieg through the Institutions and a call to action

Fire of Troy, Kerstiaen de Keuninck, 16th century
We're the Regime now.

For years now we've talked of the left's Long March Through the Institutions. The metaphor comes from Mao's conquest of China, but the process has been more similar to the creeping spread of an invasive fungus than it has been to military manoeuvres. Over the course of long decades during which it seemed that the left's steady advance was absolutely inexorable, progressives slowly, patiently consolidated control over every organ of society. They took power job by job, appointment by appointment, sinecure by sinecure, board position by board position, department by department, committee by committee,

There were those who noticed, and tried to do something about the infection - Senator McCarthy, for example. It is a symptom of the total control of the left over the popular consciousness that despite having known for years now that McCarthy was absolutely correct that the United States federal government was being infiltrated at every level by agents of the communist party, his name has remained a byword for hysterical, unjustified witch hunts.

By and large, however, absolutely nothing was done. We believed in merit, you see, and in the freedoms of speech and conscience. So what if an applicant for a position is an avowed leftist who is hostile to Western civilization down to his very marrow? He's still the best man for the job, competent within the boundaries of his discipline, and it would be a great crime to blackball him on the basis of his political beliefs. As we saw during the Cancelled Years, such broad-minded tolerance only goes one way. Frank Herbert captured it well: "When I am weaker than you, I ask you for freedom because that is according to your principles; when I am stronger than you, I take away your freedom because that is according to my principles."

Former Israeli war minister Yoav Gallant admitted that the Israeli occupation forces were ordered to implement the Hannibal Directive — a controversial protocol that involves killing captives along with their captors — during the war on Gaza.

Gallant also criticized former Police Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir for his provocative storming of al-Aqsa Mosque, stating that it "ignited the situation."

The Israeli military is facing a wave of resignations following its failures on October 7. Israeli Channel 13 described the situation as a "shockwave within the army."

"Israel's" military chief, Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi, announced his resignation on January 21, citing accountability for the military's "failure" during the October 7 operation by the Palestinian Resistance.

A powerful low-pressure system is unleashing record-breaking snowfall along Hokkaido's Pacific coast, with the city of Obihiro accumulating more than 1 meter of snow in just 12 hours through Tuesday.

Heavy snowfall has persisted since Monday night, with Obihiro recording 120 centimeters in the 12 hours through noon on Tuesday, the highest on record for the city. Snow depth in the city has now surpassed 120 centimeters, a level last seen in 1972, according to private weather forecaster Weathernews.

While the cold front's impact is most pronounced in the northern regions along the Sea of Japan, the cold air mass is also pushing westward, spreading snow to the Kyushu region facing the East China Sea and the Shikoku region facing the Seto Inland Sea.

In some parts of Kyushu, temperatures have dropped below minus 12 degrees Celsius, according to Weathernews. Kagoshima Prefecture is experiencing steady snowfall, with accumulations visible on grassy surfaces in the city center. Mountainous areas have seen roads turn completely white.

Flashback Best of the Web: Pierre Omidyar's Funding of Pro-Regime-Change Networks And Partnerships With CIA Cutouts

"To [Omidyar] it's about... integrating things together to give technocrats, business executives and government officials a God's-eye view of the world - to manage and control society more efficiently."

As we have seen in part one of this investigation, billionaire eBay founder Pierre Omidyar has partnered closely with many of the U.S.-funded outfits that fulfill the role the CIA used to play during the Cold War in backing opposition media and civil society in countries targeted for regime change. However, Omidyar has also sought state-of-the-art design solutions from a shady U.S. government national security consulting firm with a myriad of ties to the hawkish D.C. foreign policy establishment.

In February of last year, USAID's Global Development Lab published a series of reports furnished for it by a small, Arlington, Virginia-based company focused on design solutions for national security problems, with a mere 10 employees listed on its website and eight on its LinkedIn page. Those reports caught the attention of journalist Michael Igoe at Devex on Tuesday.

The company, Frontier Design Group, analyzed the feasibility of essentially militarizing USAID. The report proposals like "Rapid Expeditionary Development" (RED) teams. Those teams would be embedded with U.S. Special Forces, the FBI and the Drug Enforcement Administration outside of typical USAID areas of operation.

There are certainly large numbers of people "genetically driven to co-opt and penetrate" other countries, but they aint Russian.

A civilian airliner carrying 60 passengers and four crew members collided midair with a US Army Black Hawk helicopter over the Potomac River in Washington, DC, on Wednesday night.

Flight 5342, operated by PSA - a subsidiary of American Airlines - was on its final approach to Runway 33 at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport at around 9 pm local time, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), when it struck the helicopter at low altitude.

The US Army Sikorsky H-60 Black Hawk was carrying a crew of three and no VIPs, according to defense department officials. The exact number of fatalities remains unclear as emergency personnel from multiple agencies continue the search for possible survivors.

The US Federal Aviation Authority announced that Reagan Washington National Airport, built on the river Potomac to the south of Washington DC, was temporarily shut down following the incident. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will lead the investigation into the crash.

Best of the Web: 'No Consistent Patterns:' Scientists Find No Evidence that Closing Schools Materially Reduced Covid Transmission

covid lockdown
For years, scientists and commentators who questioned COVID policies were censored, blacklisted, and canceled across the country. Many of these dissenting views have since been vindicated from the lab origins theory to the lack of efficacy of surgical masks to the opposition to the closure of schools.

Now, a new study in the Journal of Infection further undermines the once orthodox views of the pandemic, concluding that "reopening schools did not change the existing trajectory of COVID-19 rates." In other words, we shut down our schools, without any demonstrable benefit to the country. We did, however, succeed in reducing free speech in the name of combating "disinformation."

The report is based on one of the comprehensive studies to date on the pandemic:
"Data were extracted from government websites. Cases and COVID-19 hospitalization and death incidence rates were calculated during the Delta and early Omicron periods in Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland and the United Kingdom, for two weeks preceding and six weeks after schools reopened. We summarized stringency of public health measures (GRI), COVID-19 vaccination rates by age and SARS-CoV-2 testing rates."

Best of the Web: Trump had 'fiery' call with Danish prime minister over Greenland: Report

A "fiery" phone call between Trump and Mette Frederiksen has reignited the debate over Greenland's future
President Trump reportedly held a "fiery" call with Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen over the president's insistence that U.S. control of Greenland is necessary for American national security.

A 45 minute call between Trump and Frederiksen last week spiraled into confrontation, senior European officials told the Financial Times. Trump, at that time the president-elect, was reportedly aggressive and threatened tariffs against the NATO ally.

National Security Council spokesperson Brian Hughes did not comment on the tone of the call but said Trump is focused on Greenland as part of the larger competition between China and Russia.

"President Trump has been clear that the safety and security of Greenland is important to the United States as China and Russia make significant investments throughout the Arctic region," Hughes said in a statement.

"The President is committed to not only protecting U.S. interests in the Arctic but also working with Greenland to ensure mutual prosperity for both nations," he added.

Best of the Web: How To Think About Climate Change

blue sky
The best way to think about the frenzy over climate is to consider it a modern version of the medieval Crusades. You may remember that the motto of the crusaders was "Deus vult!", "God wills it!" It is hard to pick a better virtue-signaling slogan than that. Most climate enthusiasts have not gone so far, but some actually claim that they are doing God's work. After decades of propaganda, many Americans, perhaps including some of you here today, think there really is a climate emergency. Those who think that way, in many cases, mean very well. But they have been misled.

As a scientist who actually knows a lot about climate (and I set up many of our climate research centers when I was at the Department of Energy in the early 1990s) I can assure you that there is no climate emergency. There will not be a climate emergency. Crusades have always ended badly. They have brought discredit to the supposed righteous cause. They have brought hardship and death to multitudes. Policies to address this phony climate emergency will cause great damage to American citizens and to their environment.
