"The purpose of GLADIO was to attack civilians, the people - women, children, innocent people, unknown people, far removed from any political game. The reason was quite simple: to force the public to turn to the State and demand greater security. Under a strategy of tension, you 'destabilize in order to stabilize', to create tension within society and promote conservative, reactionary social and political tendencies."
~ Italian neo-fascist whose prosecution led to the discovery of NATO's 'Gladio' networks across Western Europe

Eff that. Who needs that shit - and if a leader of a place can just be picked up and apprehended - well that metaphorically could be applicable to so many things.
Bad idea it was - consequences on the way no doubt.
In 2007 under Hugo Chávez, the Venezuelan government expropriated assets of foreign oil companies that refused to restructure their holdings to grant PDVSA (the state oil company) majority control. ExxonMobil resisted these terms, and Venezuela seized their assets. In 2014, an international arbitration panel ordered Venezuela to pay $1.6 billion to ExxonMobil, determining the compensation offered was insufficient. Venezuela did not pay this judgment.
Insofar as I'm aware Trump only mentioned this in passing and made no attempt to collect the outstanding amount due Exxon.
Instead we have this macabre theatre of USN killing patsies likely hired by US black ops to run "drug boats" that had no chance of making it to USA. There is NO evidence that Maduro was attempting to break the Cocaine Importing Agency's monopoly. There is no evidence that Trump is planning to shut it down either.
So instead of attempting to collect payment due, Trump decided to seize the entire country.
One could make the case that kidnapping a foreign president with a surgical black military operation in violation of international law could be better than declaring war and killing tens of thousands.
Of course, it is yet to be seen how this operation leads to USA "running the country". I'll believe that when (if) I see it. Considering the history of US operations over recent decades I'll be really surprised if this ends well.
However, no one should paint Maduro as a good guy.
