Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu canceled his planned trip to the Sharm el-Sheikh summit after a dramatic intervention by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, according to Israel Hayom.

The Israeli website reports that Erdogan phoned Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi mid-flight, warning that his plane "would not land if Netanyahu attended."

Erdogan's message was clear; either Netanyahu withdraws, or the Turkish leader's aircraft returns to Ankara. Within minutes of consultations between US, Israeli, and Egyptian officials, Netanyahu canceled his participation. Erdogan's plane then landed safely in Egypt.

Netanyahu's office had claimed that the Israeli prime minister, who is wanted by the ICC over war crimes in Gaza, canceled his trip due to Jewish holiday timing or the religious parties. However, diplomatic sources confirmed to Israel Hayom that the real reason was Erdogan's direct threat and regional pressure.

"There was no discussion with the religious parties about the cancellation," one Israeli official admitted. "The decision came after Turkey's warning reached both Washington and Cairo."

Sharm el-Sheikh meeting, proposed by US President Donald Trump, was meant to advance his regional plan to expand the normalization deals and include new cooperation on energy and trade.

But a regional diplomat told Israel Hayom that "some countries are still not ready for Trump's fast-track diplomacy," suggesting that Erdogan's move reflected broader Arab hesitation toward normalization with Israel while the Gaza genocide continues.

"The diplomatic spontaneity of President Trump didn't sit well with some regional leaders," the source said.

Comment: Associated Press adds:

On Monday, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani also warned Egyptian and U.S. officials that he would withdraw from the summit if Netanyahu attended, according to the state-run Iraqi News Agency.

Erdogan did not comment publicly over Turkey's role in preventing Netanyahu's attendance.

In a speech on Tuesday, Erdogan hailed the declaration signed in Egypt as a significant step toward halting what he described as "genocide" in Gaza. Erdogan has repeatedly accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza — an allegation Israel strongly denies.

Netenyahu's presence would have been an insult to those who, whether half-heartedly or sincerely, are trying to find a solution for the relief of Palestinians, whose suffering is squarely at the feet of the Israeli prime minister and his rabid cabinet.

Fast forward to the present day and the one directly responsible for genocide upon innocence in Gaza and Palestinians in general is forced to turn back from Cairo after the leader of Turkey says - I boycott his ass and really - no bullies allowed!

That is my take on it - it is ironic being the Liberty ship did NOT sink and once again nefarious plans were stifled - but for how long will this happen if the truth is not revealed?

ReRan - that is why I appreciate this bit of "news" - I hope it is accurate - if so it could indicate some views are changing about transparency - or at a minimum about tolerance for evident bullies.

Buffalo_Ken There are two levels of "truthfulness" here.

The first and highly plausible one is that Erdogan did indeed say that.

The second (and in our experience much less plausible) one is that Erdogan actually did what he talks about. He turned out to be much of a windbag lately, especially when it comes to Israel.

Can you enlighten me here, perhaps with a link to a source ?

I know the USS Liberty was attacked by nazionists back then, and several US soldiers died. And I don't buy the lame Israeli excuse for a minute.

But that LBJ was in on it and explicitely authorized the killing of his own subordinates to justify a nuclear attack would be new to me. This would be one or two steps further than Pearl Harbour, when the US administration hushed it up and did nothing, to justify their entry into WWII.

Very plausible, I would say. And ironic that the presence of the "mortal enemy" (the Soviets) had the nazionists panick and not finish their attack. I suppose this means the Soviets (basically Russians) knew what was going on, and would have interpreted a nuclear attack on Cairo as an attack on themselves. And responded proportionally.

This story makes the supicion of LBJ's involvement in Kennedy's death even more plausible. One theory is he had to die because he wanted to keep the nizionists from getting nuclear weapons. Which were most probably procured by traitors inside the White House.

It calls into question "nuclear weapon" use upon Japan as WWII was coming to an end. I have not read it, but I think I will. It is free and can be downloaded.

Yes, briefly.

And I was already aware the the official reasoning for bombing Hiroshima and Nagasaki is just a ruse. The Japanese had already offered to surrender.

But only weeks before the Red Army had entered the fray (according to an agreement between Eisenhauer and Stalin) and had destroyed the Japanese Kwantung army. This frightened the US leadership, because these Kwantung army had consisted of about 1.000.000 men, about twice what the US has faced during the whole Pacific conflict combined. And to prevent the Soviets from partitioning Japan like Germany, they decided to drop the bombs.

And you can rest assured they would have attacked the Soviets with nuclear weapons - if they had them at that time. But the Manhattan project was far less successful than officially claimed, and it took the US years to build up a proper arsenal. And at that time, the Soviets had begun to make them, too.

On a related note ...

... one of the most famous and most rabid proponents for attacking the Soviet Union immediately after WWII was general Patton. Who was basically a buffoon, owing all his "fame" to Hollywood. As a military leader, he would not have survived one week at the Eastern front. I strongly suspect he was taken out "from the inside", as he had became a loose cannon.

In that game I mentioned elsewhere "Hex of Steel" (tis pretty good beer & pretzels sort of game), I've been having a hell of a good time playing as the Russians on the Western Front starting in Poland in 1939.

If only I had the time and the patience ...

But I had been playing combat flight simulators about a decade ago, first WWI, then WWII. Fueled by an initial interest in such airplanes, as one of my grandfathers had been a Luftwaffe pilot during WWII.

codis - well the Germans had "state of the art aircraft" in WWII - cutting edge at the time...but the "ai" is plumb stupid on offense which can diminish the fun of the game - I mean the ai does use paratroopers but it drops them in an open city without support after which they are basically mincemeat. Nonetheless this is pretty much the case for almost all computer wargames.

I've just finished a scenario where there were no railroad tracks (which I appreciated cause they sort of "unbalance" things as implemented) - It was the "Battle of Voronezh" in the Summer of '42 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Voronezh_(1942) and now tis on to the defense of Stalingrad. I'm looking forward to when Russia goes on the offensive cause the "ai" does a play a better game defensively.

This would be an excellent game though to play against another human - it really does a great job of balancing many factors including "economic strength" and "available population for troops". It also does "fog of war" very well - if you don't scout out the area get ready to lose troops when support fire unspotted triggers. It has research mechanics, combined arms features, tank overrun, engineers building bridges or destroying them as the case may be, etc. It really is a fine game and I've played many over the years. The developer is basically a "one-man" outfit I think, but he has been updating and improving the game for years and it shows.
