COVID.gov, which previously contained information about testing, treatment and vaccination against the coronavirus, now redirects to a website that reads, "Lab Leak: True Origins of COVID-19."
The webpage slams both the Biden administration and former Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo's handling of the pandemic — and indicates that the Trump administration is fully onboard with the theory that COVID-19 leaked out of a laboratory in Wuhan, China.
The new website lays out five reasons why COVID-19 likely originated from a Chinese lab:
- "The virus possesses a biological characteristic that is not found in nature."
- "Data shows that all COVID-19 cases stem from a single introduction into humans. This runs contrary to previous pandemics where there were multiple spillover events."
- "Wuhan is home to China's foremost SARS research lab, which has a history of conducting gain-of-function research (gene altering and organism supercharging) at inadequate biosafety levels."
- "Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) researchers were sick with COVID-like symptoms in the fall of 2019, months before COVID-19 was discovered at the wet market."
- "By nearly all measures of science, if there was evidence of a natural origin it would have already surfaced. But it hasn't."
The House panel concluded that COVID-19 likely leaked from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, where research group EcoHealth Alliance was conducting taxpayer-funded experiments on coronaviruses.
The FBI, the Energy Department's National Laboratories and several former federal officials, including CIA Director John Ratcliffe, have reached the same conclusion.
"A lab-related incident involving gain-of-function research is the most likely the origin of COVID-19," reads a section on the new White House webpage. "Current government mechanisms for overseeing this dangerous gain-of-function research are incomplete, severely convoluted, and lack global applicability."
The website accuses the Biden administration's Department of Health and Human Services, EcoHealth Alliance, top Anthony Fauci adviser David Morens and New York's Executive Chamber (led by Gov. Kathy Hochul) of "obstruction," charging that they hindered the House probe into the origins of COVID-19 and the government's response to the pandemic which killed more than 1.2 million Americans.
The webpage also spotlights the "full and unconditional" pardon former President Joe Biden issued Fauci shortly before leaving office, which covers actions taken by the former COVID czar going back to 2014.
Another section focuses on New York's "pandemic failures," namely Cuomo's March 25, 2020, order, which "forced nursing homes to accept COVID-19 positive patients."
"Evidence shows that Mr. Cuomo and his Administration worked to cover up the tragic aftermath of their policy decisions in an apparent effort to shield themselves from accountability," the section states, adding that evidence points to Cuomo also making "knowingly and willfully" false statements House panel investigating the pandemic.
A spokesperson for Cuomo defended the former governor's actions during the pandemic, citing a Biden administration Justice Department inspector general report that found Cuomo's actions consistent with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance and the Manhattan District Attorney's Office 2022 decision not to charge the former governor with a crime.
"More than 1 million Americans died as a result of the COVID pandemic, and our hearts break for the families of every person who lost a loved one - but unfortunately, as the DOJ IG confirmed, that pain has been weaponized and politicized for purely electoral purposes for years," Rich Azzopardi said in a statement.
"According to the the DOJ IG, the State Attorney General and New York State's COVID-19 After Action Report, the state's nursing home admission guidance was consistent with federal guidance, was similar to guidance issued in a dozen Republican and Democratic-led states, and there has been no credible empirical evidence that concludes it caused additional deaths," he added. "This matter was investigated by the Department of Justice three times and the Manhattan DA who closed their investigations as a result of no finding of wrongdoing, while two civil cases brought in connection with this issue have also been dismissed."
