After a comprehensive power outage on Greenland, the power is fully back, announces the national energy company Nukissiorfiit.

Shortly after 5 am on Sunday morning, Nukissiorfiit announced that two-thirds of Nuuk had regained power. However, citizens who got their power back were urged to conserve their electricity usage. That warning has now been lifted.

According to the energy company, a fault was found on a power line from a wind turbine in Buksefjorden to Nuuk. The cause of the power outage is still being investigated.

The police's landline phones were knocked out during the power outage, and the public service company KNR's broadcasts were down. Extra police patrols were sent out in Nuuk, the suburb Qinngorput, and the village Nuussuaq. Nuuk's hospital was forced to use backup generators.

Nuuk is affected by extensive power failures
Greenland Police's landline is temporarily out of service, and KNR cannot broadcast radio as a result of a power failure

The Greenlandic capital, Nuuk, was hit by a power failure on Saturday. This applies, among other things, to the Qinngorput district.

Nukissiorfiit, which is the national utility company in Greenland, wrote this on Facebook at 10.20 local time. [...]

According to Nukissiorfiit, it is an 'accident'. Shortly after 12:30 local time, the utility company wrote that they are still working on solving the problem.

- The fault has been located, and work to restore the power supply to the city is underway, it reads.

It is not clear what the error consists of, or what the time horizon is for the power to be restored.

At 1:50 p.m. local time, Nukissiorfiit wrote on Facebook that the company has to turn off the power temporarily in the entire city because the backup generator at the power plant needs to be started.

According to the Greenlandic media Sermitsiaq.AG, the telecommunications company Tusass has chosen to switch off the 4G and 5G internet in order to save power, as the blackout drags on.

For the TV and radio station KNR, the power failure means that the network connection is out of order, so that KNR cannot broadcast radio.

In an emergency, the radio must otherwise be used to broadcast emergency messages to the population, writes Sermitsiaq.AG.
