Reports of Tesco payments not working spiked at around 1pm today on Down Detector, where people can log the issues they face with websites and services
Tesco shoppers have today been left fuming as contactless payment systems have gone down at supermarkets across the UK causing 'huge queues like Christmas'.

All forms of the speedy payment method such as Apple Pay and Google Wallet were reportedly not working at Tesco stores.

Customers said they faced massive waits in queues to pay for their shopping.

The issue was caused by a by a third-party system that has also affected a number of businesses today.

Reports of Tesco payments not working spiked at around 1pm today on Down Detector, where people can log the issues they face with websites and services.

The website recorded more than 400 issues from users who were mainly facing issues with contactless not being accepted.

'There were huge queues at the checkouts and it reminded me of Christmas,' customer Penny Carlton told The Sun.

On X, formerly Twitter, customer Jo Peters, who had visited a Tesco petrol station in Totteridge, in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire said payments were not working.

She tweeted at 2.40pm: '@Tesco awful service in your Totteridge,Bucks petrol branch today. Contactless payments not working but the staff,of which number 2 incompetent nitwits, have decided not to tell customers until they've already put petrol in Lying about how long problem had been and being rude.'

Customer Craig posted at 4.26pm: '@Tesco so the online payment issue is apparently sorted yet I still can't pay for my delivery which is due tonight as it still says there is an issue ... what to do ? Why no call from anyone to take payment and advice is just keep trying?'

Andrew Richardson tweeted at 1.31pm: 'Contactless payments not working in @Tesco. The whole shop completed and no ability to pay using Apple Pay. The staff in Oakham store don't care. You need a better way of looking after your customers when this happens...'

Other customers reported issues with payments being taken for deliveries due today.

Sarah Edwards tweeted at 2.03pm: '@Tesco Hi there, is there a problem with payments as my local store has contacted me saying a problem has occurred, and I have an order due today?'

Tesco customer service replied: 'Hello Sarah, We have fixed a technical issue which briefly meant we were unable to process payments for some online orders. You will now be able to make payment or update your payment details online if needed. We apologise for the inconvenience.'

It is now understood that payments will now be going through normally in Tesco stores and online and customer can reprocess payments for deliveries online or through the app.

A Tesco spokesperson said: 'We have fixed a technical issue which briefly meant we were unable to accept contactless payments in store and which also impacted some online orders. We apologise for the inconvenience.'
