The summer season at Lake Tahoe has been off to a chilly start, with snow flurries at Incline Village and rain showers around the lake Saturday hampering sunbathing and boating.
"It doesn't look or feel anything remotely like mid-June," said meteorologist Scott McGuire of the National Weather Service's Reno office.
Saturday's snow marks the third time so far this month that snow, however light, fell on the Tahoe area. And as much as it may have ruined picnic plans, "it won't do anything remotely to put a damper into the drought we're experiencing," McGuire said.
With temperatures around lake level at about 51 degrees in the late afternoon, Saturday's snow wasn't enough to stick on the ground. Nonetheless, vacationers posted photos and videos of the flurries on their social media.
"June is unusual, but in the past, even on the Fourth of July up there, they've had some light snow," said meteorologist Robert Baruffaldi of the NWS Sacramento office. "As long as we've had a cold system dropping down from the north moving through, it's always possible in the high elevations for a little snow."
Cool temperatures at Tahoe are expected to continue Sunday before rising into the 70s through the week. In the Bay Area, there's no rain in sight. Temperatures are expected to hit 90 degrees in Oakland by Tuesday and the high 90s in San Jose and across the Peninsula.
