November records have been smashed in parts of Queensland as a rain band sweeps the state.

The flood threat has eased, but we're on standby for storms.

sass When we observe Earth and monitor the weather we do so at different heights in earth's atmosphere, these different height levels are call hpa.

Hpa is the abbreviated name for hectopascal (100 x 1 pascal) pressure units which are exactly equal to millibar pressure unit (mb or mbar). The hectopascal or millibar is the preferred unit for recording and predicting barometric or atmospheric pressure in European and many other countries weather reports.

So to give you some idea, ground level is at 1013hp. The top part of the atmosphere in which our weather is formed is known as the tropopause and is at about 11,000 metres (35,000ft), so 500hpa is effectively half way up the atmosphere as we know it.

Note the higher you go in feet the lower the hpa value.

Australia is in the Southern hemisphere roughly between 10 to 40 degrees South of the equator.

At these latitudes you expect a degree of stability in earth's atmosphere and for the climate to be warm for the most part, this has been the case.

Now contrary to popular belief, misinformation spread around by the Global warming brigade, you'd believe that Earth was warming, WRONG, it's cooling.

To measure this cooling you take sample temperatures at different hpa at different latitudes.

I have been mentioning that a Ice age is coming, a tad alarmist you might say, yet temperature trends clearly indicate that Earth is actually cooling and is in fact destined to return to so such a state.

So what's been happening?

Hopefully this will answer your question.

I'm an Earthwatcher, I monitor weather patterns and review Global temperatures frequently and in my observations it can clearly be noted that cold air is amassing at either poles on Earth and this cold air has been travelling towards the equator.

In the Southern hemisphere this movement of cold air in parts has past 40 degrees South of the equator, so is now starting to cover Australia.

This poses a problem, in effect you have two opposing temperature gradients actively converging and the difference in temperature gradients increases the higher you go up through the atmosphere so energising the atmosphere.

At 1013hp there's little measurable difference, but at 500hpa it's a different ball game, a big difference.

You'll have read about the thunderstorms over Australia recently, this is as a direct consequence of the clashing of opposing air masses and as I mentioned, this will only get worse as cold continues to travel towards the equator.
