
The National Park Service shared incredible video to Twitter capturing the exact moment the bolt of lightning struck the tip of the monument on Sunday.
The 12-second video reveals the capital encased in a yellowish hue, as it suddenly turns blue when lightning flashes on the National Mall.
Posted at 1 am, individuals in the video are overheard gasping the very moment the bolt of lightning strikes.
'Oh! I missed it!' one person exclaims.
As a result of the lightning, the Washington Monument's electronic access system was damaged, the Park Service announced Monday morning.
Late Saturday and early Sunday, storms and heavy rain hit the D.C. area, with parts of the region receiving over five inches of rain in under two hours overnight.
As a result, streets and basements in areas of Northern Virginia were flooded, with firefighters having to rescue dozens of people - including drivers trapped in their cars in rising water.
