Multiple shooters involved in incident that leaves 13 people shot on Peoria's riverfront

Peoria police say multiple shooters were involved in an incident on Peoria's riverfront early Sunday morning that left 13 with gunshot wounds.

A man was shot in a separate incident late Saturday night just south of Downtown Peoria.

The brutal weekend has seen 17 people shot with one death since Friday night.

Peoria Police spokeswoman Amy Dotson said none of the injuries as of 6:45 a.m. were deemed to be life-threatening.

Dotson said "multiple shooters were involved, and the shooting is a result of a dispute between groups of people." When asked if the groups were gangs, Dotson said it was "groups of people fighting."

Officers responded at 4:42 a.m. to the area of Water Street and Hamilton Boulevard on a report of multiple people shot, she said. When they arrived, they found a large gathering that had nearly 200 people, she said.

Two victims were located at the scene — an adult male with a gunshot wound to the neck and an adult female with a gunshot wound to the back. Both victims were transported to a local hospital via ambulance with serious injuries.

Eleven victims with gunshot wounds to their extremities arrived separately to local hospitals via private vehicles.

In total from the riverfront incident, there were six men and seven women shot, Dotson said.

Dotson said there was no information regarding suspects and that the matter was still under investigation. Prior to the shooting, a large fight broke out among the crowd of nearly 200 people, she said.
