NSW Police initially treated the 51-year-old's death as suspicious when his body was discovered with "horrific" injuries in the unit on Monday, a spokesman told AAP on Thursday.
Multiple police crews had swarmed the quiet neighbourhood, some in forensic suits, as the unit block on Douglas Street was declared a crime scene.
However, a post-mortem examination of the man's body has since ruled out homicide, AAP understands.
The NSW coroner will be required to formally rule if the man's dog - reported to be a Staffordshire terrier - killed him in the home.
Investigators believe the man was incapacitated during the attack. The coroner will determine if reports he suffered an epileptic fit are correct.
The gruesome twist shocked members of the small community who'd suspected the man had met with foul play.
"What a dreadful thing to happen," one local wrote on Facebook on Thursday.
Another added: "Never trust a dog 100 per cent."

Yep...you cant tell that to pit bull haters, though. My two pit mix rescues have had nothing but love from us, but they *know*, without having to think about it, who is the Alpha / pack leader in the house (me)... and there is *nothing* I would not do for either of them....
All pit bulls should be neutered or spayed.
