Astonishing footage shows a dust devil sweeping through a small town in Africa causing havoc and sending debris flying through the air.

The video, which was posted yesterday, shows the massive whirlwind-shaped cloud ripping up an area where plastic chairs were lined causing them to swirl around in the air.

The footage shows shocked onlookers backing away from the incredible natural scene as the gusts of wind sent chairs flying through the air.

A dust devil is a strong, well-formed, and relatively long-lived , ranging from half a metre wide and a few metres tall to more than 10 metres wide and more than 1000 metres tall.

The primary vertical motion is upward. Dust devils are usually harmless, but can on rare occasions grow large enough to pose a threat to both people and property.

They are comparable to tornadoes in that both are a weather phenomenon involving a vertically oriented rotating column of wind.
