The Israeli armed forces launched an attack after a mortar shell fell next to a security fence in the north of the Israel-held Golan Heights.
"In response, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) targeted one artillery piece in the area from which the fire originated, in the northern Syrian Golan Heights," the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said in a Twitter statement on Monday.
An IDF spokesperson refused to comment on what kind of weapons Israel used in response, saying
only that "the Syrian regime" will be held accountable and that any attempts to "breach Israeli sovereignty or endanger civilians" will be thwarted.
The Golan Heights, which have been under Israel's control since the 1967 Six-Day War, regularly witness cross-border fire between Israel and Syria.
Israeli forces have conducted dozens of airstrikes against Syrian armed forces and their allies in recent months.

targeted a position for the Syrian Army in al-Kom town near the Occupied Golan Heights as the government forces crackdown on jihadi groups in the area.
According to a military source, the strike hit an artillery position in the bordering town but no casualties reported.
The Israeli aggression comes as the Syrian Army has been targeting Islamist militants in Al-Hamidiyah and al-Qahtaniyah towns. The bordering area between Syria and the Golan Heights are controlled by ultra-conservative Islamist groups whose members repeatedly receive medical treatment in Israel.
Israel
has attacked Syria with a missile strike targeting a position for the Syrian Arab Army in al-Kom, a town near the Occupied Golan Heights.
This comes as the government forces crackdown on ISIS and related jihadi groups in the area. Israel's history of supporting ISIS has been documented by Atlanticist press as well. "Israel 'giving secret aid to Syrian rebels', report says. Direct funding, food, fuel and medical supplies allegedly provided by Israeli state to keep Isis and Iranian-allied forces in neighbouring civil war at bay ", according to the report covered by the Independent.
Today's strikes represent what could be moves of desperation on the part of the Zionist entity, and generally are meant to test the geopolitical waters.
