san antonio cop ambush
San Antonio, TX Detective Benjamin Marconi, a 20-year veteran of the SAPD, was shot and killed outside police headquarters in downtown San Antonio.
Four police officers in Texas, Missouri, and Florida were shot in mostly ambush-style attacks. A San Antonio officer died from gunshot wounds. All suspects were either killed or arrested by police.

San Antonio (Texas) Police Department Detective Benjamin Marconi, a 20-year veteran of the SAPD, was shot and killed outside police headquarters in downtown San Antonio. Late Sunday morning, Marconi, 50, was issuing a traffic citation when a black vehicle pulled up behind his squad car. The driver exited the vehicle, walked to Marconi's passenger side window and fired one round, hitting Marconi in the head.

The suspect, Otis McKane, who has since been arrested, then reached into the squad car and fired at Marconi again, police said, according to the San Antonio Express-News.

Bexar County District Attorney Nico LaHood insisted there was no motive behind the killing, just "pure evil."

"This is pure evil when you execute an individual in cold blood. There's no motive behind it. There's no justification for something as evil as this," LaHood said, according to KENS.

Comment: Agreed. Interesting though, how different standards are applied when police officers execute people in cold-blood.

San Antonio Police have since released video of McKane in custody.

Two more officers were shot Sunday in Missouri. A St. Louis Police Department sergeant, also a 20-year veteran of his police force, remains in critical but stable condition after being shot twice in the face while he sat in his patrol SUV on a city street, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The shooter pulled up beside the officer and fired into the officer's vehicle, lodging two bullets into the officer's face, according to a Post-Dispatch source.

"The officer says he saw the muzzle flashes and felt the glass breaking in his window as the shots came through and struck him in the head," said St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson.

A suspect in the shooting was shot and killed by police early Monday morning. Police were in pursuit of the suspect's vehicle when the suspect, a passenger in the car, exited the vehicle, fired at the police truck, and ran. Police pursued, shooting and killing the suspect about 100 yards away, the Post-Dispatch reported.

In Gladstone, Missouri, a suburb of Kansas City, an officer pursued a suspect on foot who had exited the passenger side of a vehicle pulled over by police, according to the Kansas City Star. The officer caught up with the passenger, who shot the officer amid a struggle. The suspect was shot and killed in the process. The officer's injury are not life-threatening. The driver of the vehicle was taken into custody but later released.

In Sanibel, Florida, a barrier island off the southwest coast of the state, an officer was shot and wounded by a passing motorist, according to The News-Press, while he sat in his squad car following the traffic stop. The officer was treated at a hospital and released.

Early Monday morning, the Florida Department of Law arrested Jon Webster Hay, 49, and charged him with attempted homicide in the case, according to the News-Press.
