Evoking a sense of curiosity among the people, a halo appeared around the sun in the skies of Palakkad on Friday. A similar phenomenon was reported from Alappuzha and Kozhikode the other day. The halo appeared around the sun at Thursday noon in the skies of Alappuzha town. According to Met department, an atmospheric whirlpool formed in Tamil Nadu and Lakshadweep caused the halo.

The solar halo is formed when there is a surge in humidity in atmosphere. In fact it is the light which diffuses after hitting water particle in atmosphere that appears to be a halo. It is not a rare phenomenon.Atmospheric whirlpools are formed by concentration of air in a particular spot.
