A little-appreciated fact is that the surface brightness of extended sources is independent of their distance, since both the angular size of the object, and the intensity of light, fall off as 1/r^2. Thus, even if e.g. Andromeda were much closer, it wouldn't be substantially brighter to the naked eye than the Milky Way.
