Description -- The highest volcano in Nicaragua in Central America has erupted, prompting about 3,000 residents to evacuate.

The 1,750-meter San Cristobal, located about 150 kilometers north of the capital, Managua, erupted with large bangs 3 times on Saturday. Volcanic ash covers a wide area.

The Nicaraguan government had about 3,000 residents from 9 areas nearby evacuated.

It says continuing volcanic activity may affect as many as 20,000 people. 300 soldiers have been sent to the area.

San Cristobal is known to be an active volcano. Nicaragua has been on alert after a strong earthquake of magnitude 7.6 shook neighboring Costa Rica on Wednesday.
