Argentina, Buenos Aires - premature baby who had been declared dead was found alive 12 hours later in the morgue by her mother.

The Argentinian parents of the baby, who is now critically ill in hospital, were going to name her Luciana Abigail but changed their minds and are calling her Luz Milagros instead, her middle name the Spanish word for "miracles."

"Luz is a miracle," Analia Bouter, the baby's mother, told the local press. "If we had left it to go and see her another day, she may not have held on."

Luz was born three months premature at the Hospital Perrando, in the city of Resistencia, in Argentina's northern Chaco province. Doctors said she had no vital signs.

After the birth, the parents left the hospital but decided later they wanted to go and see their daughter's body, which was being stored in a drawer in the morgue.

"I went with Fabian, my husband, at around 9 p.m. to see her body," Ms. Bouter told local press.

"We opened the drawer and I touched her hand. I felt her look at me and when I saw her alive I fell to my knees. Then suddenly she let out a cry. She was freezing in there."

She added, "She was all covered up and full of something that looked like frost."

The Daily Telegraph reported that Mr. Bouter had already taken steps to obtain a death certificate.

He said when the drawer was opened, "I folded back the blanket and we saw her hands moving. I couldn't believe it. I was speechless." Mr. Bouter told a television station, "It was like she was waking."

Ms. Bouter added, "I don't know who is to blame, and I'm not thinking about it at this moment. The joy of knowing she's alive is covering every other feeling. I'm a Christian, and I believe this was a miracle of God."

Rafael Sabatinelli, health undersecretary of Chaco province, told the local press that an investigation had been opened to determine who was responsible for mistakenly pronouncing the baby dead.

Five people, including doctors and nurses, have been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation, he said, calling the incident a disgrace.

"The baby is gravely ill, in critical condition," the official said, explaining that the infant was born prematurely and weighed only 800 grams (1.76 pounds).
