Remember when we didn't have photography?
Public images of famous people were drawn, painted, or perhaps sculpted. Most artists tried to show their customers in their best light.
I don't think the problem is with public images. I think the problem is with public perception. If most people knew that looks don't matter as much as the corporate world wants us to believe, they would just shrug off these images. The world of glamor and fame has always been held up to us as a desirable world that we should seek to be part of. To the extent that we laugh at these pitches instead of take them seriously, the power of these images over us will be greatly reduced.
