Hurricane Jova bore down on southwest Mexico Tuesday, prompting warnings along the coast, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said.

Jova, a Category 3 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 115 mph, was about 150 miles southwest of Manzanillo and about 200 miles south of Cabo Corrientes, heading north-northeast at 6 mph, the center said in its 5 a.m. EDT advisory.

A hurricane warning was in effect from Punta San Telmo north to Cabo Corrientes. A tropical storm warning was posted for Lazaro Cardenas north to south of Punta San Telmo and north of Cabo Corrientes to El Roblito.

On its current track, the center of Jova was expected to be near the coast in the hurricane warning area Tuesday afternoon or evening, the center said.

Tropical storm wind conditions were expected to reach the southern portion of the warning area Tuesday morning, and hurricane wind conditions were forecast to reach the warning area by Tuesday afternoon.

Jova was expected to produce a dangerous storm surge with significant coastal flooding near and east of the center's landfall, the NHC said.

Six to 12 inches of rain could fall over the states of Michoacan, Colima, Jalisco and Nayarit, with isolated amounts of up to 20 inches possible, the NHC said. The rain could cause flash floods and mudslides.

Dangerous swells generated by Jova already have affected portions of the southwestern Mexican coast, the center said.
