Almost 1000 acres of maize found to have been grown with genetically modified seeds have been destroyed throughout Hungary deputy state secretary of the Ministry of Rural Development Lajos Bognar said. The GMO maize has been ploughed under, said Lajos Bognar, but pollen has not spread from the maize, he added.
Unlike several EU members, GMO seeds are banned in Hungary. The checks will continue despite the fact that seed traders are obliged to make sure that their products are GMO free, Bognar said.
During their investigation, controllers have found Pioneer and Monsanto products among the seeds planted.
The free movement of goods within the EU means that authorities will not investigate how the seeds arrived in Hungary but they will check where the goods can be found, Bognar said. Regional public radio reported that the two biggest international seed producing companies are affected in the matter and GMO seeds could have been sown on up to thousands of hectares in the country.
Most of the local farmers have complained since they just discovered they were using GMO seeds. With season already under way, it is too late to sow new seeds, so this years harvest has been lost.
And to make things even worse for the farmers, the company that distributed the seeds in Baranya county is under liquidation. Therefore, if any compensation is paid by the international seed producers, the money will be paid primarily to that company's creditors, rather than the farmers.

The farmers apparently didn't know they received GMO tainted seeds. They should be made whole for their lost crops before that criminal seed company's creditors see a penny, because they should have done due diligence. Hungary's courts need to do the right thing, and make it happen.
Congratulations to countries willing to make a stand! GMO companies such as Monsato need to be brought down before they destroy all crops, desolate all of our lands and harm all beyond reproach. I just wish the US congress had the integrity to stand up against them.
Those farmers would do good to go for a more independent farming style, to cut their dependence on external seed suppliers and such. Letting some useful, nutrient-accumulating weeds and flowers grow on those barren fields would make the land more fertile. Of course it'd also leave the weed seeds there, but you can always sheet-mulch them to an order. Hungarian farmers, I recommend you to get known to permaculture, it can save your future.
And congratulations and thanks for stopping the GMO on your front. I hope the rest of the europe and the world takes a hint from what you done.
How amazing to see a Government stand up and do the right thing for Planet Earth and all its life forms. I can happily nurture the little glowing ember of Hope that resides in me. I send fertile soil, happy bees and healthy children thoughts to Hungary. Well done.

That really sux for the farmers to make their livlihood from farming. Now what are they going to do for an income? Its to late to replant and the crop is lost.I hope their Govt. makes it right for them.Hungary has my vote for standing up to monsanto now if only the fda or who ever is responsible would stand up to monsanto rather then letting monsanto have their hands on their wallet and pay them off.Monsanto needs to go bankrupt for their horrible atrocities to the plant life they have created and the harm they are doing to plant life and human life.
Oh yea thats right their buddy obama says they are TO BIG TO FAIL and will do whatever he can do to help monsanto stay in business to gut the human race.Talk about a PUPPET MASTER.
Go HUNGARY!!!!!!!!
