A powerful spring storm packing hail, heavy rain and strong winds caused extensive damage just south of New Orleans, Tuesday evening, authorities said.

Maj. John Marie with the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff's department said the heaviest damage was reported between Harvey and Belle Chasse. The Belle Chasse Ferry recorded 100-mph winds around 7:30 p.m. (8:30 p.m. ET), he said.

A Plaquemines Parish sheriff deputy reported seeing a funnel cloud in Belle Chasse and said his police cruiser was spun around by the powerful winds, Marie said. There also were reports of trees and power lines down throughout the parish, along with light street flooding.

Col. John Fortunato with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office said storm damage covers about a seven-block area, which includes a Walmart and a number of other businesses.

There were no reports of injuries in either parish.
