Students at Indio High School have been released to go home early following a lock-down prompted by reports of an unknown odor in two math classrooms.

The odor was reported just after 11 a.m. First arriving fire units at the scene near Avenue 46 reported that two people had fainted and requested county hazardous materials and environmental health teams to respond to the incident. It has now been confirmed that only one student fainted. 11 students total were taken to John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Indio after complaining of feeling ill. Fire officials say their ailments are considered to be non-life threatening. The parents of those 11 students have been contacted.

There were rumors that the cause of the odor may have been due to a freon leak, however fire officials have confirmed those rumors are false. The cause of the odor remains under investigation.

School officials say classes will resume tomorrow as usual. Parents are urged to call the school's main line at 775-3550 for more information.
