An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale jolted Aceh waters on Monday at 11.44 am Western Indonesian Time (WIB), according to information of the national meteorological and geophysics office.

The earthquake's epicenter was located at 2.15 degrees northern latitude and 96.05 degrees eastern longitude, around 50 km southwest of Sinabang, Aceh Province, and at a depth of 30 km below sea level.

Indonesia is in a zone known as the Pacific "ring of fire", which is prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity.
