Cracking Easter: £300 egg smashed on way from Italy |
Staff at Johnsons Coffee were left with egg on their faces when they discovered that the £300 egg they ordered had not survived the journey intact.
The 20kg egg was due to be displayed in Mount Charles outlets and raffled off to customers in a 'guess the weight' competition.
All monies raised were to go to Marie Curie Cancer Care in Forestside Shopping Centre, Belfast.
But disaster struck when the Italian importers alerted Johnsons Coffee that the egg would reach the province in pieces.
The chocolate egg, said the company, was "a victim of over- zealous handling during the transportation process".
Claire McAuley (pictured above), area representative at Johnsons Coffee, said: "We are extremely disappointed that the display will not go ahead.
"I'm sure the egg would have been truly impressive to see in its former glory.
"We hoped to raise money for Marie Curie and would hate for the charity to miss out due to it being damaged in transit."
Johnsons Coffee managed to scramble together a replacement 3ft Easter egg made of Belgian Chocolate.
The new egg weighs 4.5kg and will be on show in Café Laurent, Forestside, Queen's PEC and Café Braid in Ballymena in the run-up to Easter.
Customers will be able to enter a raffle to win the treat with the proceeds going to Marie Curie.
