Water chaos in Lombardy: Milan drowns in floods
The River Seveso burst its banks after heavy rainfall and flooded streets and underpasses in the Niguarda district. Cars got stuck in the floods and the fire department is in constant operation with around 75 deployments. Schools were evacuated as a precautionary measure while the water continues to flow through the city.

Despite flood protection measures, the retention basin is not enough to stop the masses of water.

In other northern districts of Milan and in Lombardy, emergency services are also battling against flooding and blocked roads to rescue cars and clear traffic. According to the Italian news agency Adnkronos, 650 "technical emergency operations" were carried out by the fire department on Monday due to the bad weather front.

The provinces of Como, Monza, Varese and the metropolitan area of Milan, where three schools were evacuated, were particularly affected. To cope with the situation, 100 men from regional commands and other regions were sent to assist, bringing the operational strength to over 200 units.

Heavy flooding in France has seen roads turned into rivers as a severe weather alert has been issued for swathes of the country.

Dramatic video footage has captured the impact of the extreme weather in the picturesque coastal Carmague region of southern France, with the streets flooded with ankle-deep water following heavy rainfall.

An 'orange alert' for thunderstorms and vast flooding has also been introduced across both Paris and the Île-de-France region.

In Provence and the Alpes, 'intense, widespread and thundery' rainfall could reach as high as up to 70 to 90mm in some areas and, locally, 120mm in just a few hours, forecasters Meteo France warned.

Further south, 'hail, sometimes medium or large, strong electrical activity, violent gusts and even whirlwinds' are forecast, with temporary 'violent gusts of wind' expected near the coast in particular.

The stormy conditions are understood to be due to a powerful Atlantic high-level current which is crossing France from Brittany.

Severe downpours in northeastern Turkiye have caused landslides across the Black Sea provinces, Azernews reports.

According to the Turkish State Meteorological Service, heavy rains are expected to continue in the provinces of Artvin, Giresun, Rize, and Trabzon.

The disaster has cut off access to 343 settlements, triggered landslides on 26 roads, and damaged or destroyed several bridges. Authorities confirmed that no casualties or injuries have been reported.

Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu and Minister of Youth and Sports Osman Aşkın Bak visited Rize province to assess the situation on the ground.

Four people were confirmed dead, and seven remain missing on Thursday, as hundreds were forced to evacuate after flash floods struck Valencia City on Wednesday night.

Niño Estrera of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) said responders faced difficulties attending to emergency calls all at once because of the unpredictable and rapidly rising water levels, particularly along Panlibatuhan Creek, where thousands of residents live.

Responders were activated at around 5:30 p.m. when heavy rains began, but within minutes the water surged, forcing sudden evacuations. Floodwaters also swept away vehicles, livestock, pets, rocks, and other debris.

In a video posted by vlogger Rey John Tuyor Maquiling, residents in a relocation village shouted for help as floodwater quickly rose, trapping them in their homes.

Flooding and mudslides carrying trees and rocks buried roads, damaged homes and trapped drivers in several southern California communities, authorities said.

The mudslides affected Forest Falls, Oak Glen and Potato Canyon in San Bernardino County on Thursday, the county's fire protection district said in a statement.

A group of about 10 people traveling in at least six vehicles was stranded on state Route 38 in the area of Jenks Lake, near the San Bernardino National Forest, the fire district said.

"Though cut off by debris in both directions, the group is safe and their needs are being evaluated by emergency crews," the district said.

The route was still closed as of Friday morning, the California Highway Patrol said.

On September 17, heavy to torrential rain continued in parts of Jiangxi, Sichuan, Hubei, Henan, and other provinces. On the same day, the meteorological department raised the emergency response level for major meteorological (rainstorm) disasters from Level 4 to Level 3.

Landslides and heavy rain in India's Himalayan state of Uttarakhand killed at least 15 people on Tuesday, with 16 missing, Indian media reported on Wednesday.

Visuals showed muddy water gushing through the town of Sahastradhara in the district of Dehradun on Tuesday, leaving destroyed shops, roads and houses, as people cowered behind walls.

"My shop was washed away," an unidentified resident told the ANI news agency, adding that it was one of seven shops swept away in a market. "There is no sign of them."

On Tuesday, officials retrieved 13 bodies from Dehradun and one each from the districts of Pithoragarh and Nainital, the Indian Express newspaper said.
