Severe flooding has struck the Colombian city of Medellín after heavy rains on January 28 caused the Medellín River to overflow its banks, inundating large parts of the city.

According to foreign media, the powerful downpours triggered widespread disruption, including major transport interruptions, flooded streets and shopping centres, and damage to road infrastructure.

Eyewitnesses reported that dozens of vehicles stalled in the middle of roadways as water levels rose sharply. Moving around the city by bicycle or motorcycle became extremely hazardous due to strong currents sweeping through the streets.

Floodwaters also entered shopping centres, where store owners and employees were seen attempting to save merchandise and pump water out of flooded areas.

Anchorage broke its January snowfall record Tuesday as another winter storm dumped more than 10 inches of snow on the city, prompting early school dismissals and snarling traffic.

As of 3 p.m., the National Weather Service office in West Anchorage had recorded 10.6 inches of new snow, bringing the month's total to 39.7 inches — the most ever recorded for January, eclipsing a record set in 2000.

What's even more remarkable is the nearly 3 inches of liquid held in that snow, along with some rain that fell during the month, according to National Weather Service climate researcher Brian Brettschneider.

"The amount of precipitation we've already received in January is what we typically get from January 1st through about May 10th," he said. "And there's been almost 10 years where we didn't even have this much precipitation all the way through the end of June."

Forecasters cautioned that driving could be very difficult, especially during the evening commute.

Winter Storm Fern lived up to the hype and was one of the biggest snowstorms in the East in years, dropping more than 18 inches on some ski resorts. The storm was predicted to affect millions of people in the South, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast over the weekend. It was forecast to bring heavy snow, ice, and brutally cold temperatures throughout the East.

Several ski resorts are reporting more than a foot of snow fell on Sunday, with ski resorts in the Northeast still receiving additional snow today. The ski resorts reporting the highest snow totals were located in the Pocono Mountains of Northeast Pennsylvania and the Catskills of New York. Plattekill Mountain in New York reported the most snow accumulations from the storm, with almost 34 inches. Mountain Creek Resort, located in Northern New Jersey, reported 24 inches of snow from Winter Storm Fern.

This snowstorm forced some ski resorts to close or operate on a limited basis on Sunday; however, most planned to open today, making it a great powder day for skiers and snowboarders in the East.

At least three people, including two adults and a six-year-old girl, were struck by lightning during a heavy hailstorm yesterday on a road in the province of Cuzco, southeastern Peru.

The Andina news agency reported, specifying that the victims were riding a motorcycle when they were struck.

According to Cusco police, after receiving an emergency alert, officers went to the site, where they confirmed the death of three people, apparently members of the same family, who were found almost buried by the hail.

The latest stretch of his journey took him to South America.

But the German climate activist died while cycling through the mountains of Peru.

The 29-year-old was caught in a torrential storm in the Andes on Saturday (17 Jan) evening.

Earlier that day, he'd set off from Huaraz City to reach the Pastoruri Glacier in the mountain range.

Florian sought shelter in his tent, before being zapped by lightning.

In his final moments, he had apparently called for help.

He'd contacted the German Embassy in Peru to report that he was trapped in a remote region in the severe storm.

When the embassy was unable to detect a signal from his GPS device on Sunday, they raised the alarm.

Rescuers asked for assistance from local shepherds who saw Florian hours before contact was lost.

The authorities said their information was crucial to identifying the exact search zone.

The team found Florian lifeless in his tent in a field next to his cycling equipment, as reported by Need To Know.
