The flooding in Nicaragua that we first reported here has continued to affect the country, leaving 24 dead and 32,000 homeless. All 17 of Nicaragua's departments have been affected.

Over the last few days the flooding has affected parts of the capital Managua, where at least 9 people died after 4 houses collapsed in one of the city's poor communities.

The rain has been so relentless there is simply no place for the water to go. A report in Nicaraguan newspaper La Prensa said "There is no end to the rain and the ground is saturated".

Local authorities say that over 4,500 homes have been damaged or destroyed. Over 5,000 are living in relief camps after being evacuated.

Heavy rainfall in the wake of Tropical Storm Trudy have caused flooding and mudslides in Guerrero and Oaxaca states in southern Mexico. Over 4,000 people have been evacuated and a state of emergency has been declared in 36 municipalities.

Four died in a mudslide in the municipality of Ometepec. In the same area one man was swept away by a swollen river. The other death occurred in Tlacoachistlahuaca.

Flash Flood Warning

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Flash Flood Warning for the Big Island until 12 noon Saturday (Oct 18). At 9 a.m. rain gages at Kulani Cone above Glenwood showed heavy rain falling at two inches per hour. This area of heavy rain was nearly stationary. The heavy rains will continue to stream into the Ka'u and Puna districts over the next two to three hours.

The Hawaii Police Department reports that Highway 11 between the 57 and 58 mile marks between Pahala and Naalehu is closed to all traffic due to flooding. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and to use alternate routes if possible.

Campers and hikers should avoid low lying flood prone areas. People should stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding. The rainfall and runoff will cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action.

The city of Vigo in Galicia, Spain, is still under water after heavy rain has battered the region since 16 October 2014. WMO reports that the city saw 81 mm of rain fall in 24 hours between 16 and 17 October 2014.

Emergency teams from Protección Civil were called out on at least 20 occasions. The worst affected areas were the central parts of the city and also around the Balaídos football stadium. Numerous roads around the coty have been blocked by flood water around 40 cm deep. Not only did he flooding stop traffic, it also stopped car production in the city's Citroen car plant. Trains and ferry services have also been affected.

The storm has left over 9,000 without power.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms wreaked havoc on Toronto streets Thursday night, leaving cars stuck in water at several flooded intersections and lengthening the commute for many Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) riders trying to get home.

Subway service was suspended both ways between York Mills and Eglinton stations due to flooding at Lawrence Station, which was to remain closed until the morning, according to the TTC.

Hundreds of people were lining up to catch one of the 28 shuttle buses running between York Mills and Eglinton stations. On social media, commuters were posting photos of the long lines, water on subway tracks, as well as flooding on buses.

A number of other TTC service alerts were issued as well, and they can be seen here. Regular service was restored on some of the previously disrupted routes.

Heavy rain over the last 24 hours has brought flooding to parts of North Jutland (Nordjylland) in Denmark.

North Jutland police are reporting a road near Sindal has been completely closed after parts of it collapsed as a result of the heavy rain and flooding.

Other roads, including the E39 motorway, as well as parts of the railway network have also been badly affected. Earlier today police advised motorists to avoid travel where possible. Some roads looked more like lakes after the prolonged rainfall. Extra water pumps have been brought in to help alleviate the flooding. Several houses in Lendum are said to have been completely flooded.

A slow moving low pressure system moving from the Caribbean dumped record amounts of heavy rain on north and south-western Nicaragua on 9 October 2014, causing floods and landslides in the departments of Rivas, Granada, Chinandega and Rio San Juan.

As many as 6,000 people (800 families) have been affected. More than 500 people had to be evacuated and are now being houses in temporary accommodation. SINAPRED (Sistema Nacional para la Prevención, Mitigación y Atención de Desastres) reports that 24 houses have been completely destroyed in the floods, with a further 890 damaged. There are unconfirmed reports that over 20 families have been completey cut off by flooding near the Ochomogo River.

A young girl, aged 5 years old, died when she was swept away in flood waters in the village of Santa Teresa, Ometepe Island.

Heavy rainfall sent floodwaters rushing through parts of northern Italy and southern France Thursday into Friday, swamping buildings, trapping vehicles and killing at least one.

Flooding swamped city streets in the northern Italian coastal city of Genoa (population about 600,000) Thursday night. Numerous vehicles were trapped by water up to windshields, then floated, and piled into and on top of each other once the floodwaters subsided.

At least one person was killed in Genoa after being swept away in floodwaters, according to Reuters. Streets were left covered in mud after the water receded.

More than 7 inches of rain fell in Genoa in a three-day period ending Friday morning, local time. However, Thursday into early Friday, alone, 7-12 inches of rain had fallen in the Apennine Mountains north of the city, helping to push the Bisagno River well out of its banks.

Local media in Sudan are reporting that at least 10 people have been killed in 2 separate incidents of flooding in South Sudan over the last 7 days.

The Sudan Tribune reports that heavy rain in Eastern Equatoria state between 04 and 05 October 2014 caused severe floods in the county of Magwi. Roads and bridges have been damaged as a result of the flooding. The heavy rain has also caused landslides in the area.

At least 6 people died in the flooding in the village of Owinykibul. The heavy rain caused the Atebi River to overflow and one person died after being swept away while he attempted to cross.

The Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation says bodies of Ebola victims have been left in the streets because of a strike by burial teams, who complain they have not been paid. Health Ministry spokesman Sidie Yahya Tunis says the situation is "very embarrassing" and said money was available to pay the teams. He promised to provide more information on Wednesday. The World Health Organization says Ebola is believed to have killed more than 600 people in Sierra Leone. In Spain, officials said a fourth person has been placed under observation for Ebola in a Madrid hospital where a nursing assistant that became infected after working with two victims from Sierra Leone and Liberia, who later died. The infected woman's husband is among those being observed. - ABC News

Three more people were put under quarantine for possible Ebola at a Madrid hospital where a Spanish nursing assistant became infected, authorities said Tuesday. More than 50 others were being monitored as experts tried to figure out why Spain's anti-infection practices failed. The nursing assistant, part of a special team that cared for a Spanish priest who died of Ebola last month, was the first case of Ebola being transmitted outside of West Africa, where a months-long outbreak has killed at least 3,500 people and sparked social unrest. Health authorities are investigating how she became infected. Her case highlighted the dangers health care workers face while caring for Ebola patients - officials said she had changed a diaper for the priest and collected material from his room after he died. Dead Ebola victims are highly infectious and in West Africa their bodies are collected by workers in hazmat outfits. - CBC
