A tank, which ran over two children in St. Petersburg this year, has been seized by a court from the head of a local patriotic group. Illegal weapons and a live crocodile were found in his home earlier.

This spring, the leader of the Krasnaya Zvezda (Red Star) patriotic organization, Pavel Baranenko, organized tank rides in one of the parks on the bank of the Neva River in St. Petersburg, Russia. Thrill-seekers were asked to pay 300 rubles (just over $4) for a chance to sit atop a World War II era T-60 Soviet light tank as it traversed an obstacle course.

Syrian Foreign Minister warns White Helmets kidnapped 44 children to stage chemical attack in Idlib

The White Helmets have kidnapped 44 children in Idlib to use in a staged chemical weapons attack in the militant-held part of this Syrian province, Syrian Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Walid Muallem stated following talks with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov.
"Behind the creation of the pseudo-organization the White Helmets, are the British special services: they sponsor them, they lead them. They were behind the organization of those fabricated scenarios for the use of chemical weapons and now they are preparing such a development of the situation with the use of chemical weapons in Idlib," Muallem said.

Comment: Of course, you cannot have a convincing, heart-wrenching staged chemical attack if you don't sprinkle the scene with a few bodies of dead children.

The whole world has been warned now. If and when this happens, you know who to blame. You will also know that the Western bombardment to follow will be a naked, cynical and unjustified aggression.

In the first physical settlement of the Chinese yuan-denominated oil futures contract, five companies will deliver a total of 600,000 barrels of Middle Eastern crude grades to buyers of the September futures contract.

China's crude oil futures launched in March, with crude set for delivery in September, the first month which the Shanghai International Energy Exchange (INE) designated for deliveries in order to allow the contract to develop and accumulate volumes for physical delivery.

The deliverability, the volume, and smooth process will be key to China fulfilling its ambition to have the yuan-priced oil futures contract become a major crude benchmark on a global scale like the Brent and WTI benchmarks, analysts told Reuters.

The first such test will be next month, during which Chinese companies, including state-held majors, will deliver oil against the Chinese oil futures contract to storage facilities that are among the eight sites that the Shanghai exchange has approved for cargo delivery in the futures contract, according to sources.

Best of the Web: The origin of 'white privilege': US aristocrat Peggy McIntosh's catastrophically flawed thesis

Peggy McIntosh white privilege
Peggy McIntosh
"[White Privilege is] the unquestioned and unearned set of advantages, entitlements, benefits, and choices bestowed upon people solely because they are white. Generally white people who experience such privilege do so without being conscious of it." -- Peggy McIntosh, quoted in the Racial Equity Resource Guide
The concept of 'white privilege' was popularized by Peggy McIntosh in a 1989 paper written at Harvard University and titled, "White Privilege: Unpacking The Invisible Knapsack." It was written as a personal, experiential essay, and it details 26 ways in which McIntosh's skin color has been decisive in determining her life outcomes. This hugely influential paper has been responsible for the subsequent proliferation of a rigidly enforced theory of privilege throughout social movements and university classrooms. So central has this doctrine become to progressive politics, pedagogy, and activism, that to even question its validity is to invite the inquisitorial wrath of 'social justice' radicals. But it is for this very reason that it is important to subject McIntosh's ideas to scrutiny. So let us return to the source and to first principles and unpack Peggy McIntosh's knapsack...

Logged off: The teens who refuse to use social media

Mary Amanuel
© Alecsandra Raluca Drăgoi for the GuardianMary Amanuel, who does not use social media.
For 17-year-old Mary Amanuel, from London, it happened in Tesco. "We were in year 7," she remembers, "and my friend had made an Instagram account. As we were buying stuff, she was counting the amounts of likes she'd got on a post. 'Oooh, 40 likes. 42 likes.' I just thought: 'This is ridiculous.'"

Isabelle, an 18-year-old student from Bedfordshire who doesn't want to disclose her surname, turned against social media when her classmates became zombified. "Everyone switched off from conversation. It became: 'Can I have your number to text you?' Something got lost in terms of speaking face to face. And I thought: 'I don't really want to be swept up in that.'" For 15-year-old Emily Sharp, from Staines in Surrey, watching bullying online was the final straw. "It wasn't nice. That deterred me from using it."

It is widely believed that young people are hopelessly devoted to social media. Teenagers, according to this stereotype, tweet, gram, Snap and scroll. But for every young person hunched over a screen, there are others for whom social media no longer holds such an allure. These teens are turning their backs on the technology - and there are more of them than you might think.

French-Russian film star Gerard Depardieu "absolutely denies" accusations of sexually assaulting a young woman, his lawyers said after a 22-year-old French actress filed a complaint, which then surfaced in the local media.

The complaint against Depardieu, 69, was filed with the Paris prosecutor's office on Monday. It accused the actor of sexual abuse on two occasions, August 6 and August 13, Le Parisien reported. The young woman is understood to be a protégé of Depardieu's and also the daughter of the famous actor's friend.

Depardieu's lawyer Hervé Témime confirmed that a complaint against his client had been filed, but said the actor "absolutely denies having committed the slightest offense" against anyone. He said he expected the complaint to "not prosper on the judicial level."

Comment: Mr. Depardieu has admitted to having a rather unsavory past, so it will be interesting to see if other women decide to come forward.

'Big Three' global credit ratings agency Standard & Poor's (S&P) has assigned its AA+ long-term and A-1+ short-term issuer ratings with a stable outlook to the BRICS New Development Bank (NDB).

The AA+ is the rating agency's second-highest ranking, behind only a AAA rating. "The ratings reflect our opinion that NDB will establish itself as a catalyst in reducing the infrastructure deficits faced by its BRICS members," S&P said in a press release.

NDB was founded by the BRICS member countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) in 2014 and formally opened in Shanghai in July 2015. The goal of the bank, with an initial authorized capital of $100 billion, is to fund sustainable development infrastructure projects in emerging economies.

Overall, NDB has 23 projects costing $6 billion, including $1.7 billion in China and $1.8 billion in India. Each member country has a 20-percent shareholding and voting rights.

A court in St. Petersburg, Russia has sentenced a man to six years in prison for terrorist propaganda and recruiting new members for the banned Islamic State group using popular internet messenger WhatsApp.

After including several members in this group, he subjected them to terrorist propaganda. In particular, Rustamov attempted to persuade his targets to commit terrorist attacks and join illegal terrorist groups, such as the infamous Islamic State (IS, formerly known as ISIS).

Investigators told the court that the group members received texts and videos that contained, among other things, "information about the events in Syria presented from the positions of terrorist ideology."

US military planning to establish air defenses at its garrison in Syria's al-Tanf

Satellite image of Al-Tanf
The US-led coalition is planning to establish air defense stystems at its garrison in the area of al-Tanf occupied by the US in southeastern Syria, former Commander of Syria's Deir ez-Zor Military Assembly Fayez Esmer told Turkey's Yeni Safak newspaper on August 28.
"The US's next step is to build a missile defense shield in the region which must be considered as a part of Washington's long-term plan for chaos in the region," Esmer said.

The Washington administration has realized that the PKK [the Kurdistan Worker's Party] is insufficient regarding its plans related to east of the Euphrates. Therefore, it will further fortify its military presence in the region. On the other hand, US activities carried out in Syria and Iraq is due to its determination to exploit underground resources."
